Recently: A wonderful recording for the music alone but also a great test CD for determining tone quality and air in a system. This is a solo violin work recorded under wonderful conditions. On my system it sounds like I am right there!

Sonatas and Partitas Pour Violin solo BWV 1001 Julia Fischer

Ok, it's a Soundtrack, but nevertheless, "Tous les matins du monde / Jordi Savall". Fantastic.

This is an excellent modern version of the greatest song cycle ever made

Excellent conducting, excellent playing and fantastic singing.........close to a perfect 10.

Though I still hold Klemperer's famous recording with the Philharmonia / new Philharmonia in a greater light.

Heifetz, Rubinstein, Piatigorsky...

Million dollar trio indeed.

A soundtrack, but they use the original classsical pieces from the period of the movie story, played on pêriod instruments by top period players (Jordi Savall and co)

Piece 5 'Une jeune fillette", a sad 'song', has for some reason always triggered a very emotional resonnance in me.

It's not going to be my 1 recommendation, but an excellent compilation of pieces from that period.

Beethoven Piano Concertos 1 & 2 by Lars Vogt with Simon Rattle on EMI

Though they are not as popular as No.5, I think Vogt's performance is THE reference for No.1 & 2

Beethoven, Symphony #6 "Pastoral," New Philharmonia Orchestra under Carlo Maria Giulini. A wonderfully sensitive playing of this music. Available on a 2-CD set from EMI now, with symphonies 8 and 9.

This is very difficult, but this has been one of my favorites since the 80s

Some may find it sacrilegious, but the NES Chamber Orchestra's performance of the Goldberg Variations is simply stunning. I prefer their recording to any other performance I've heard.
