Need help with speaker amp...

I am fairly dead set on purchasing the HiVi Swan D2.1SE. Over on AVS forum people are saying it is easily the best speaker in the price range and competes with many speakers about twice the price. The fit and finish are amazing too.

I already have a fantastic preamp - my Melos SHA Gold Reference. The source is going to be something top notch - cary or esoteric most likely (depending on what pops up on audiogon). I don't have a power amp though, and quite frankly, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to that arena. Unfortunately, the fact that I only have a $500 budget does not help things.

With a $500 budget, I think going used would be my best bet. However, I have no idea what would be the ideal characteristics to look for in an amp to mate with the D2.1 SE's. I listen to rock, classical, and jazz equally, and the piano is of special importance to me (piano performance major). The piano has to sound real. I like a fast punchy sound with a liquid midrange and accurate bass, but no sibilance in the highs. I crave weight and impact.

Basically I'm going for the sound signature of the Melos/Grado headphone combo, if that is possible.

Should I go tube or SS considering my preamp is already a tube hybrid? Vintage or newer stuff? I really am new to the speaker world so any help I get would be GREATLY appreciated.

why dont you get the source first (so you can use it with your head rig) and in the mean time learn acoustics and how your room is..

you get those two down then the amp and speakers have an easy job at doing what they Should do best,.

I'm looking to buy the source and amp and speakers at the same time. I have $3000 play money at the moment, so I figured that $1200 source, $1000speakers, and $500-600 amp would be good while leaving money left over for livewire iem's.

I don't have much control over the room for the next year; it's a college dorm. Next year I will have my own apartment however and figured that I might as well enjoy the speakers now too.

While you are dead set on these speakers and they do look nice please take a look at the omega hemp line they can be had for around the same price and sound outstanding. I have had several headfiers over the house and they have to a person been amazed at the sound of the hemp cone driver

What are the sound characteristics of the omega's?

And as for the amp for the swans, what do I need to be looking for? How many watts, what about current? Will a 35wpc cary work? Or do I need a 150w SS parasound? I feel like I'm starting all over again here...
