I'm sure the K501 folks have something to say on that.

Zorander, you know, you're right, the K501 and the HD580 should probably be both mentioned in the same breath as breakthroughs yet to be surpassed......I forgot the 501 because it's one I've never experienced, but others certainly worship it, rightly so..........

I haven't either but having sampled both the K501/601/701 and HD-580/-600/-650 house sound, I know my preferences lie with the latter. My choice is quite easy.

The Corda MOVE certainly synergises well with the HD580s - this is my work setup and my HD580s have never sounded as good as this, particularly with 12V.
My track record in chronological order:
a900>hd650>akg701>hd650>(+)akg701>dt880>dt990>hd58 0

the HD650>K701 move was because i thought the hd650 was really really dark, but i had a corda headfive and a lite dac-ah in the mix. dac-ah + head5 + hd650 = overwhelmingly warm. i used the dac-ah + head5 combo up until i got my dt990.

K701>HD650 was because the k701s bored me. reminded me how much i missed the more musical nature of the hd650 (read: bass).

HD650+K701>DT880 was because the hd650s were getting on my nerves again (see above reason) and i wanted a more neutral can that didn't drown me in midbass. the k701s bored me again. time to explore new camps...

DT880>DT990 was because the dt880's lack of bass started to annoy me. hello DT990

DT990>HD580 was because the "V"-equalizer-like-nature of the DT990 really bugged me. HD580 was relaxed, polite, not bass shy, not shrill like the dt990, and looks damn cool w/ a hd600 grill and 650 cable. corda move + modded hd580 is a winner for me right now.

that's if i don't get bored or annoyed by them anytime soon.

that bass is starting to sound a tad flabby to me...

Most Economic Solution:

K501 (with K701 pads) instead of the K701
+
HD580 (grilled/recabled) instead of the HD600
------------------------------------------------
$300 in total. And thassit folks. The End. HAHAHAHA.
