Some questions concerning the K 701

Thread Starter
Hello, as this is my first post in this forum I want to start by introducing myself.
I am 17 years old and I'm Austrian, I listen to mainly metal(thrash death and black metal), rock, tango (also nu tango) and sometimes classical music.
So here are my questions:
I have 400-500€ which I could spend on a pair of good headphones and a headphone amp.
Is this enough?
I am planning to get the K 701 (I could get them for about 250€ from amazon) or is there a headphone you would prefer for my taste of music?
I am planning to use the set at home because i don't want such a big headphone when I'm at school or just taking a walk or riding the bus. So I want to listen to them for hours and hours without getting headache or something. Maybe someone who has got the phones could tell me if they are comfortable.
And is there good amp you would recommend for the K701?
So, please someone help me and answer.

P.S. Excuse my English, as mentioned before I'm not a native speaker.

They're not comfortable @ all without making a cover for the headband.

I beg to differ; I've never felt this headband pressure point that everyone else seems to feel. YMMV.

well I have ALOT of hair to cushion, could that be a problem?
by the way I think a electronics shop near me has the K 701 so I could try if they are comfortable

The ribbed headband hurts me in the first minute.

I did a large review on the 701's. They are a blase headphone that have an incredible amount of detail but absolutely no punch.
The midrange is their forte and the high and low extensions are lacking. (did I use 2 foreign words in one post?)

For the kind of music that you listen to, purchasing them would be a huge mistake. You are probably better off with a pair of Senn HD600's, Beyer DT-880's, or Ultrasone 2500's...in that price range.

IMHO

No, if you have a sh!tload of hair, that'd be good, cushioning you from the awful 701 headband. I have a low cut, and I had to mod w/ soft fleece/velour wrap.

BTW, a simple question that would help us to recommend you a premium headphone is:

"What are the settings on your car stereo ?
Bass/mid/treble
Is it flat all across, or more treble, more bass ?? ???

I don#t have a car but hmm. I don't like too much bass. I like it when I can follow the bassline in songs but without the bass being to dominant. So I guess I want something that is "flat all across"

Get the Audio Technica ATH-AD2000 if you don't mind paying.

If you're stuck at K-701's price point, take your 3 favorite albums to the shop and try DT-880, K-701 for sure. Maybe HD-650, and other lower cost ATH-AD line.

Since you are new....here's some advice.....look at reviews....do your research....and hear the k701 for yourself.

A lot of posts are from people who have read or heard the k701 for 5 mins unamped, pre-burn-in and they run their mouth....(not implying any posters in this thread is one of those people).

Since you got a store near by come and do a listen....but know the the k701 will sound almost like garbage pre- 300 hours burn in or un-amped.

If the store got one of the senns variety...hd650, hd600, hd580, hd595 check them out too and see if you like it better than the k701....

The one I heard had 500 hours on them and I used real good sources and amps.

I did get to hear the first one that was released when Tyll brought one to a NYC regional meet and it had 5 hours on it.

The difference is gi-normous after burn in, but it is still a polite headphone like the ATH-W100's.

hey, im looking to make the same purchase along with a headroom micro amp, i listen to more folk/rock/classical, but have a pair of grado SR225's too. One of my biggest concerns is comfort, because the grados are lacking it. I can find dt880's, dt990's, akg k701's and hd650's all in the same price range. I haven't heard any of these headphones, and probably wont have the opportunity too (i live in RI, anybody know any shops nearby?). Can anybody help me make up my mind?

Attend the August Boston meet and you will the opportunity to have hear them all with all sorts of components.

Since you primarily listen to rock/metal, I wouldn't think the K701 would suit you.. I think the K701 is too detached for your rock/metal tastes which needs that grado 'upfront-ness'.. but have a listen anyway..

recabling the 701s (eg Moonaudio Blackdragon) will resolve many of the issues
discussed here.
