The Aleph 3 & 30 have low voltage gain.

Does this mean that it wouldn't be good to run it (the First Watt F1) straight out of the Benchmark DAC1?

No. the dac-1 will still be good for this.

That's comforting to know.

Did you find that out by trying your First Watt F1 straight out of the DAC1? or does the DAC1 generally supply enough voltage gain to properly work with the First Watt F1?

Thanks again.

It definitely supplies enough voltage to make the F1 work well. I still like the ZD as the pre however. I'll probably get around to typing a real review of the pres once I'm done doing my W5000 comparisons.

The Lavry to the Aleph 30 did the job, but you want to go beyond "just doing the job" with this level of amplification.

Please don't tell me a single ended source -> passive pre -> Firstwatt F2 -> K1000 would be a bad setup. Please! Would it?!

Yeah I understand that. Of course.

Being a bit tight on budget, I have to choose between getting the b22 (preamp/amp) or First Watt F1 first?

Which one would be a better idea? Of course I would like to eventually have both, but which one should come first?

Thanks.

Take your K1000s to your local dealer and hook them up to as many speaker amps as you can to see what you like.

Ha, yes I have thought about that.

I may do that.

Ooops - sorry man. Forgot to look around. I'm at work but will have to check my home computer. I believe I saved them on there. I thought I had them on my PM still but it got erased.

If I don't find them, I'll track down the member who emailed them to me.

Funny how I can change my mind. I'm seriously thinking of using my GS-1000/HP-2 as my main headphones and keeping the K-1000/Aleph 3 as a backup.

For me the the HP-2 has a musicality all its own. Comparing to my other phones makes the HP-2 sound a bit in involving at first, but after about 6 songs with it, it gets me into a zone that no other headphone can do.

The GS-1000 is exciting, lifelike no bass or treble roll off what-so-ever, and just flat out warm, musical, detailed and enjoyable. Plus you can make it sound like an RS-1 with 414 pads. It doesn't have quite the resolve or accuracy as the K-1000 or HP-2.

The K-1000 is extremely accurate and all that but the lowest bottom end (no amp can overcome this) just doesn't give the proper weight and it ... dare I say just doesn't have the fun musical quality my GS-1000 has. I feel like I'm being a good audiophile listening to it, but the GS-1000 is just more addicting and fun for me - subject to change at any minute.

Don't hold me to this - it could be temporary insanity. Either way, I'm keeping the K-1000 to avoid any regrets down the road (helps that the price keeps going up).

So, the F1 is going to be on hold for now.

Has anyone had a chance to compare the F1 and F2 with the K1000? I've read some listening impressions between the two at diyaudio, but a comparo with the k1000 used would be even more helpful

The F2 is much rarer. I don't know anyone who personally owns one, and I know of at least one head-fier who has been looking.

Just want to say congrats with the Beta and the K1000s. Don't go selling your Beta right away, especially since you like the way it sounds. I use an Extreme Platinum as a pre-amp to a F1, and am blown away every time I put my headphones on. Yet, I sometimes listen to the K1000s straight out of the Extreme, which changes the sound, but still pleases me. It's a mood thing. And even though you think you're a one-headphone kinda guy right now, you never know when just the right headphone may come your way and you'll want it as a complement to the Ks. Stranger things have happened 'round here.

I think it's too late already, but he can always build another one.

Yeah, I actually already sold the Beta 22

In any case, I'm in the process of ordering my parts for building a 2 channel passive ground Beta 22 to serve as a pre-amp and also to drive other cans should I ever get some (and we all know I will somewhere down the line ).

So for me now the choice rests in picking a power amp - F1 or F2. I've already ordered a case, heatsinks, and transformer that will be suitable for either.
