Just got a new phone. A MUSIC phone (sony ericsson w810i).

And what can't it do? Play mp3's as ringtones. WTF!!!!

My older s710 can do it, why can't a WALKMAN branded cellie do it!?

Friggin carrier restrictions!

And I thought it does

I have a w300i, and all I have to do is fit the approx. file requirements. (128k or less in quality, ca. 40 seconds or less) Cingular/sony ericsson don't exactly tell you this stuff... you have search around the net for the info. I use Mp3DirectCut to splice the mp3 file, and lame to re-encode it if the bitrate is too high.

I thought the problem was with the DRM security that must be present with the MP3. Basically, they just want you to download it from them.

I use also use cingular/att and my cousin in philly has the w810i. We can both put on our own ringtones.

And this is why you should never listen to the opinions of others regarding quality of cell service providers...

Have you tried cutting the mp3 file to around 30-40 seconds? It also had to be 128k max quality, and like 700KB max in size, approx. (sorry, I forgot to mention the latter.. brain fart) It has be under a megabyte.

It seems a 600k filesize, encoded at 128kbps and ~30 seconds are key here.

We haven't talked about the billing, either. There are so many reasons to dislike AT&T. I'm with Time/Warner now.

time warner cellphones?

I'm assuming there's just a size limit. Usually around 500kb on phones like this. It has nothing to do with the carrier, and the thread title is completely wrong.

In order for MP3's to work on my old Motorola V180GSM, I had to make 128 kbps 16 or 8-bit mono MP3's I believe. That worked every time.
