Stax SR404 > OmegaII

Thread Starter
I currently own an SR404 powered by my own DIY tube amp and it sounds fantastic. But I sometimes dislike the sharp treble of the SR404 and I'd like more soundstage depth/space to the front. Instruments and voices appear too close. Would the OmegaII fare better in this respect? I'm willing to pay the cost. Can anyone comment on the differences between the OII and the SR404?

The SR-007 is what you are searching for. They are much more laid back and relaxed then the Lambdas and just let the music flow. The bass is the among the best there is and the midrange is the best there is. The only problem is that they are a beast to drive, so what output tubes are you using?

Strong points of O2's over the 404's. IMO
1) More refined
2) More coherent from top to bottom
3) Larger headstage
4) Larger soundstage
5) Vocals are hauntingly real sounding
Really this is just the tip of the iceberg though

Weak points.
1) Much more difficult to drive (properly)
2) Extremely picky of IC's and everything else for that matter
3) $$$$

Before you plunk down the megabucks on an Omega you might want to try the 404 with Silclear contact enhancer paste. Its about $35.00. I found that it improved the 404 dramatically especially giving it more bass, dynamics and taming the treble etch that some find.

You forgot to mention you need some seriously good silver cabling for the above to happen

The sound of the Sennheiser HE60 is more in key with the Lambda's sound without the harshness. Omega 2s have quite a different sound signature.

Any more info on your amp? I'm curious.

Sure and a stunning source but neither is very expensive (relatively) if you are handy with the soldering iron.

True, the HE90 is more like a Lambda with much less upper midrange/lower treble harshness and much less bass extension.

We need some more info on that amp of yours.

Yes but it need not be expensive , just of the right design/materials.
1) No teflon dielectrics
2) Small awg wire (think 30 or 32 awg)
3) Small contact point(s) for the return line

That's about it. You can use some OCC wire or some other long crystal version but it has to be soft annealed or even better yet soft annealed with age. These cables are very thin and easy to manage but they can be a bit fragile.
