Beta22 vs Dynalo?

Hi all,

I'm in the proces of building a Beta22, but I already have a Dynalo that I use. It will likely be another two weeks or so before I am able to find the time to finish the Beta22, but I'm curious about the difference between the Beta22 and Dynalo and can't wait. Can anyone who has spent extensive time with both amps comment on the differences in the sound? Common! Get me super excited to get the Beta22 finished!

they both make the music louder, you probably won't notice a difference

lol - I hope I notice a difference, otherwise I will be selling the Beta22.

On second thought, maybe I hope I don't! I could use the cash from the sale of the beta to buy a new source. (Or, more likely, to buy wedding rings).

I'll be pretty surprised if you're not impressed with the beta. That's no harsh statement on the Dynalo, I've only had brief experiences with that amp. But considering that I found my PPA to be superior to the D-lo and also found my 3-channel beta superior to the PPA my experience tells me that you'll detect differences. How subtle those differences seem is completely user-dependent.

I just want someone to help me get really excited for finishing this beast. All I have left to do is install the trimpots, capacitors, the MOSFETs and connect the wires up to the MOLEX connectors for power in and sound out connections - I figure that'll take me about two hours, plus another half hour to an hour to do setup.

Yeah, that definitely helps! I'm also interested in how it sounds compared to balanced amps!

n_maher,

What's the total build cost (including case,etc.)? Is it the 3-channel config? I keep hearing it's a difficult build. Any
thing to keep an eye out for?

It costs about ~$500 after everything, including case, RCA jacks, hookup wire, umbilical cord parts (if you do a two case solution, which is highly recommended). It's not worth the cost savings to put it all in one case, as this amp seems to be fairly sensitive to transformer hum.

I spent a lot more than $500 building mine, of course I did that before jrossel started offering the kits and shaving some off the price. Then again I also used the backplane board (another $100), a better than average pot (Alps Black Beauty, $75), and did a lot of custom chassis work. If I were giving someone a budget I'd say to count on $800 and hope that it comes in less than that.

The difficult bits of the build aren't all that difficult but they still seem to trip a lot of builders up. Simple things like part locations and ID's, proper wiring, etc. And I wouldn't say the beta is any more sensitive than any other amp, it just uses a lot bigger trafo than most others and also (in my case) a different type of trafo which is known to produce larger EMF fields, or so I'm told.

And the balanced project has started but it's in its infancy, no pretty pictures yet. I really need to finish my DAC before I start something else!

I agree, my amp cost me more than $500 to build (excluding the costs of re-purchasing the kit because I screwed up royally), I just did the addition on what it would cost to build the Beta22 using Jrossell's kit and buying the absolute minimum number of addtional parts necessary to complete the amp. But budgetting on $500 isn't a wise thing to do.

Well, the Dynahi outperforms the Dynalo by a fair margin, and I thought it was the general consensus that a ß22 outperforms a Dynahi, if only slightly, but with a tad bit warmer sound signature.
