EMU 0404 USB owners - please check your EMU for me

Hi

I've been having problems getting my EMU to sync with my CDP ever since I bought it a few days ago and I'm totally stuck.

I've now noticed that behind the flaps of the optical out port, there is a red light showing, while the optical in port, there is no Red light.

Could you guys with the EMU 0404 USB take a quick look behind your optical in port for me and tell me if there is red light is on please.

If there is a red light behind your EMU, this may indicate my EMU is faulty as I don't have a red light in mine

The red light you see is the digital optical signal being sent out. This is why it's present in the "OUT" port, but not the "IN". It does not mean that your 0404 is faulty--in fact, quite the opposite. The fact that it is outputting a signal is a positive sign!

^ yup.

the optical in is RECEIVING the light... therefore does not have a red light

the optical out is SENDING a signal out... therefore has the red light

strange thing for me is that if you look into the 2nd MIC/Hi-Z/Line port, there is a blue light inside... O_O

Instead of trying to get it to sync external CDP can you hook it up to your PC soundcard via digital and try to get it to sync to that? That will weed out if it is the EMU causing the issue or not.

That's what I'm going to try next. I have ordered a 3.5mm to RCA cable from Blue Jeans and it should arrive in the next few days. In addition to that, I've also ordered an optical cable from ebay which should arrive at the weekend. If I can't get it to work using those, then it's going back to the shop......

whenever i have syncing problems (ie. after i restart my computer), i simply turn off the unit and turn it back on, switch to the right mode, and voila! fixed faster than a ruptured gut

That blue light is from under the top PCB of the unit. I'm guessing it's there to make the unit look cool in the dark. Either that or some kind of indicator light for the techs.

Mine won't sync when I do that unless I switch sampling rate to something else than back to what I normally use. Then I must switch it off/on and it syncs. But this seems to be an issue in XP and not Vista so must be my X-Fi XP drivers causing it.

also note that i use the unit as a standalone DAC (i use the toslink optical in) and not the USB connection

Greetings!

I may sound stupid, but this is a thing that bothers me. How should the Direct Monitor and the Mic volume knobs work? Shouldn't they work the same as the main output and headphone volume knobs? The last two are working ok, nice smooth transition from one level to another. The first 3 I was talking about are not very smooth in their movement, they seem to be mechanical or something.
I am not sure I described this the right way, but I hope you do get the "picture".

The direct monitor level control is a stepped digital encoder it adjusts the volume of your DM-signal in the digital domain wich is then summed to your main signal. For listening it should be turned up to the max ( where it doesn't get louder;as it is an endless encoder.) as to avoid digital truncation.

The mic level pots are real attenuators though at least on my 0404 they are not stepped
