The 595/650 sound signature is totally different.. How ppl can claim the 595 are veiled, dark, & dull is beyond me..

The MS1 isn't really a better headphone than the HD595, just different sounding. Listening to them side by side, I preferred the HD595 by a fair margin, and that was unamped. Mine is also the 120 ohm version, so that might make all the difference in the world.

^^I've never listened to the MS-2, but from what I've heard, you shouldn't be disappointed. That's one of the few headphones I've still got my eyes on (that or the HF-1).
How would you say the sound quality of the MS-1s compare to the 595s, in terms of accuracy and detail? What about sound stage? Do you find the performance of the MS-1s at hip-hop, dance/trance, electronica, or instrumentals far more incompetent compared to the 595s? Or is the difference slight or subjective?

I feel the same way too, about Grados. I personally find their design very appealing.

I'd read that the 595 were livelier and more forward sounding compared to the classic laidback Sennheiser sound, so I was hoping for something more engaging.

Yes

So far I'd say the only genre the 595s seem to particularly shine at are instrumental pieces and music scores.

If the 225s are better than the MS1, then you should just stay with the 595s. They really come out ofter use.

I had the HD595s with no amp, and hated the sound. I had them with a PA2V2, and still thought they kinda sucked. Then I got an RSA Hornet M, and i was blown away.

Whoever is telling people the 595s sound good without an amp are dirty liars

Majkel is right. The soundstage and warmth of the cans makes the difference.
Compared to most of the Grados the 595ers are more comfy, too. You will realize that after a long listening session...

HD595 is laidback and veiled, no matter how much amplification you can provide, and its INTENTIONAL just like its in HD600 and HD650 (Senn calls this diffuse field equalization). While its slightly brighter than other higher-end Senns, its still Sennheiser and share some of the virtues and flaws of their house-sound. You are a Grado guy most likely if the veilness bothers you. Sennheisers DH eqing just mismatches your ears, that is all.

It all depends on the music you want to listen to as well...
As a Jazz-Head I prefer the Senns to the Grados. For Jazz-Rock/ Fusion I prefer the Grados, though. Maybe that's why people who listen to Metal/ Rock and Pop prefer the direct response (and less soundstage) of the Grados. From my point of view it's always nice to hace a choice. Who out there has just one headphone anyway?

One headphone only? No way! I'm a believer!!

Different moods, different music, different styles, different amps, different PHONES! Yeah! "Team Multi-phone"!!

It's just kinda sad that we just have one head to put headphones on, innit?!

Yeah, for classical music the HDs are just phantastic, I agree totally. The HD might even be a little better than the HD595 when it comes to classical music:

Still soundstage is essential here. Just imagine the acoustics of the royal opera house in London if all the listeners would sit in the orchestra pit!

It's always worth to know how music sounds beyond your cans and where and how it was recorded.

It's been a while since I listened to the MS-1 (meet in Jan), so I may not be 100% here. I remember the HD595 having more detail across the board, as well as a much better sound stage. Kinda like a wrap around your head effect as opposed to a just left and right sound that I got from the MS-1. I'm pretty sure that was the main reason I preferred the HD595 over the MS-1. I did try the MS-1 with some NIN and Soundgarden and with those it sounded just lovely, minus the soundsage, which made Electronic music (about 25% of my collection) sound a little less involving. I don't listen to much hip-hop or trance, so I can't comment on those (yes, there's a difference between Electronic and Trance IMO).

Like I said before, both are good phones. It's all about sound sig preference. I suppose I'm just a Senn kinda guy.

Actually, I consider the Senn EH350s as a good all rounder. Vocals are in the forefront while details are oozing out of its gazzoo. Its soundstage further makes it perfect for ALL types of music. People make it seem that soundstage can only be appreciated through classical music. Learned that it AIN'T true. It makes every song less monotnous and further emphasizes instruments because they're further accentuated from the foreground.

I listen to a variety of music (Gorillaz; Interpol; Nirvana; Radiohead; Arcade Fire; Bloc Party). I can honestly say that only FEW songs I have do not have 'natural' soundstage (and therefore does not benefit directly from soundstaging.)

I personally don't think I could live with an Alessandro/Grado w/o Liberators now that I know how crucial soundstage is to music.

Always take that into consideration when buying new cans..

Another plus of the HD595ers is that they are according to my experiences more pleasant in combination with vinyl in general (less hiss and crackle irritation) - but I am sure there are other ears out there telling different stories

All senns look pretty sexy, not gonna lie
