Help me decide on headphones | AKG - Beyer - Audio Technica

Hey guys,

I cant decide between these models.

A900
AD700
AD900
AKG 701

I hear the AKG 701 requires a decent amp to run... and i cant justify spending upwards of $600 on an amp.. although i really really want them because they look so good! and i've read there very good phones! would they suffer alot and sound crap if i used them with no amp?

furthermore if i get the AD900 yes they are better than the A900 as they're open model, but they don't look very good esp compared to the A900... is the open version that much better than the closed version?

And do you recommend anything from beyerdynamics?

I need a pair mainly for music(mp3)/gaming, music(mp3) being higher priority, and i want a good clear detailed sound but having a warm and decent accurate strong bass. They will be used for PC with an X-Fi Sound card.

From my experience, the K701 would definitely sound bad without a proper amp. And seeing your description on what you want sound wise, the K701 is not suitable anyway. I have not heard any of the high-end AT phones but the beyer DT880/990 should do the job well for you even though an amp is a must as well heh. Good Luck in your search

AKG701 matches extremely well with Heed CanAmp which is i think about 400$. So go for this combo
Without any amp forget them....go for Grado's.

You'll be surprise how much different b/w the open and close version of AT 'phone. You really need good amp for 701, so only consider it if you can get an good amp. AD700 is a good choice (and a safe bet) since you can have the extra money left for a decent amp.

good looks and good sound often don't go hand in hand

yes, the K701 will sound terrible unamped, especially if you plan on using it on your PC or something

i don't know what soundcard/source you have at the moment, but it may be worth putting some money into a better soundcard and buying a pair of phones that don't require an amp

exactly... yes, K701 are a great pair of HP, but they require a lot of power...

among those you mentioned, it depends a lot on what you want...

however A900 is a nice HP...

x2. I went with recommendations here and just bought a pair of ES7s and they're excellent. Superb sounding and very cool looking. When I saw pics initially I thought they were too pretty to sound good but boy was I in for a pleasant surprise.

I have the A900s and I love them. No amp required. There's some reviews of most of those headphones on my website, the link's in my sig

I used to own the A700 and A950LTD, and have heard the A700, AD700, AD900 and K701. I haven't heard the A900.

The K701 is a very good headphone and I consider it one of my favorites. It can compete with headphones that are much higher in price such as the AD2000. I wouldn't use it without an amp, though.

The A700 and A950LTD share a similar closed-in type of sound with a smaller soundstage than the AD Series. They have more emphasis on treble and bass, with a comparatively recessed midrange. If you want strong bass, I think the A700 and A900 would be better choices than the AD700 or AD900. Although these ATs perform well without an amp, they scale up nicely with a good source and an amp.

If your budget allows, I recommend going for the highest number AT in a series you can. I think the higher number models do sound better than the lower model ones. It's less like the HD600 vs. HD650 where individual preferences play a larger role.

The Beyerdynamic DT770 and DT990 also have strong bass. I prefer the DT880, which I think has a more detailed, clearer and better-balanced sound.

wow the Audio Technica - ES7 do look very nice simple and sleek! love the shine on them.

How do they compare to the A700/A900 and AD700/AD900? are they better? and whats the bass like on them? i am not after heart pounding bass, i still want to be able to hear the mid and lows with detail but i still want a decent good strong bass.

does anyone know what kind of good price i can find these for and where? i am in australia...

ATH-ES7...and ricmat, here we go again. See this here. The way things are going I'm never going to make the case for the AD Series.

The ES7 has a fun and engaging sound that's great with pop or fast-paced music. It's suitable for portable use, though it doesn't hang around the neck easily due to the way they swivel. I don't think it's as refined as the Senn HD25-1, but when listening is as much fun as the ES7 can be, I don't care. It does have strong bass impact that I consider emphasized. Neutral? I don't think so, but again it sounds fun so I don't really care.

For home use I would choose the A700/A900 or AD700/AD900 over the ES7. The ES7 isn't as comfortable and not as good as the A700 or AD700, IMO.

For portable use?

Honestly, if you use PC + X-Fi as source, you will waste these top end headphones. None of them will produce their best sound with sound card. But there is better alternative, you can still use the X-Fi for gaming; and buy a CORDA MOVE which has built-in DAC/USB, for you to listen music while this will by-pass the X-Fi, then you can choose a Beyerdynamic DT770 which has stronger bass and warm sound when pairing with CORDA MOVE. Skylab has this combo and the performance is at top edge. AKG is good but not that warm and with stronger bass.

CORDA MOVE + Beyerdynamic DT770 ($235+$215, while you got a discount when bought all these from Meier Audio, the vendor of CORDA) and you will have the well known best service from Dr. Jan Meier directly.
