The driver is housed within a hard black shell that is visible as part of the outer edge (where the wire mess contacts the black surface). It is very ridgid, and may be plastic or some other man-made composite.

The drive itself is translucent white (off white really, but a light color). It is flat and made of some kind of membrane, again not sure if it is plastic. Not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I believe the outer edges of the driver are rectangular in shape, but I believe the active portion is oval or round. This membrane attaches to the ridgid black housing described above.

Do enough searching in archives and you will find pictures of an open ear piece.

Check Stephan Audio Arts to see if they still have a link to an installer in Nashville. This guy used to work for AKG.

Are K-1000s some of the best headphones ? Do they really require speaker amplifier to drive them ?

I decided against buying one because of the cost of buying another amplifier. May be I will regret that decision one day or may be not.

1. Yes. They are among the top rated ones.
2. Sort of. There are dedicated headphone amplifiers out there that are capable of driving them (afaik ex. Zana Deux is quite capable). But most owners seems to be using speaker amplifiers.

They definitely like a speaker amp, and have about the same driving requirements as the HE6 out of mine.
