RP-21 vs Denon D-2000? - Page 2

When I had the RP-21 I was very impressed with them. They just sounded great. The only thing I didn't like about them was thier size. I found the 21 to be to big for my lounge chair. Then I read a post about the DENON D5000 and the D1000 and the poster said the D1000 was about 75-80% of the sound of the D5000. The thing that really got to me was their small size so I ordered a pair of DENON D1000. Now I never thought such small cans could sound better than the RP-21 but boy was I in for a nice surprise. The D1000 had great highs much better than the RP-21 and I liked the bass better much tighter I also thought the sound stage was better with the D1000.

So I sold the RP-21 and keept the DENON 1000. Now I would think the D2000 would sound better than the RP-21 but really don't know because I never heard the D2000. I am so impressed with the D1000 and their small size that I ordered the RP-15mc because of their smaller size over the RP-21. I get the RP-15mc on the 26th of this month.

well it's true for all phones. any phones are going to be on the fs forum someday. new models, old models, what have you. it's not a matter of patience, or wise-ness, or being here long enough or not, it's just the way things work. someone is going to put something up for sale everyday.

but with the prices in the fs forum, i'm not sure how much you will be able to save. 10, 20? not enough to justify the time cost and that BURNING desire to listen to the phone, which i know you have. so you may as well just get it now. so go on and order one.

HAHA!

Over the years here at Head-Fi I have saved literally many hundreds of dollars (heck at this point it is more than likely over a 1,000) buying used on the FS forum, so I will be patient and wait. Even if I saved $20, that's 2 new CDs, or a case of beer, or a nice dinner, or a movie for me and the wife, or a tank of gas for my car, or simply $20 I'll have saved toward purchasing the next FOTM phone once they (inevitably) go up for sale in the FS forum when the hype dies down...

I'm pretty sure I can wait, the phones I have now *should* be able to get me by until then, LOL. I'm pretty confident the D-2000s will not be replacing my top phones that I currently have in my collection. Since I am not a fan of closed phones, trying out the D-2000s is nothing more than a morbid curiosity for me - a novelty if you will. When I have a choice, I will reach for a pair of open phones every time. But I realize there are occasions where I do need to have a closed pair of phones in my collection. So unless the D-2000s bury the RP-21s in every conceivable way, I would probably end up selling the D-2000s anyway, since it wouldn't make fiscal sense to have a pair of phones in my collection that only get used 15% of the time.

Darth Beyer V3 > D5000 > D2000 > Senn HD25-1 > Beyer DT770 > RP21

I'm happy to see the D-2000s high up on the list. I haven't heard the HD25-1s, so can't comment there. Since I have owned the DT770s and the RP-21s, I can confidently say that my opinion would differ, and I would put the RP-21s above the DT770s by a wide margin.

The only thing that makes me nervous about that list is that a pair of Beyers (albeit a heavily modified pair of Beyers) are rated above all of those other phones, including the Denons. The reason it makes me nervous is because there isn't one thing that I like about the BeyerDynamic house sound. The only pair of Beyers I didn't dislike (and actually kind of enjoyed as far as closed phones go) were the DT250-80s.

That must be some kind of crazy magic mojo-vodoo that Headphile works on the DT770s to make them sound that good. I'll get around to hearing a pair of "Darth" Beyers one of these days. But I dislike the Beyer house sound enough to avoid taking a blind (deaf) plunge and plunking down the money for a pair to find out.

Ah well. I'm beginning to think that the RP-21s are good enough for the application in which I will be using them; a closed set of phones for when I am in a situation that I am forced to use them instead of an open set of phones.

Skylab says the RP-21s have a slightly trebled flaw...

Perhaps it is mojo-vodoo... I too would like to hear 'em if Skylab ranks 'em above the D5000s.

There's just gotta be something better than RP-21s.... I *am* curious as to why Skylab ranked DT770 above RP-21s...

SKYLAB!! We need answers!

there is probably no Vodoo about it...........

If Skylab said the 770 > RP21 and you clearly don't agree, then his preference list won't work for your ears, at all. In a perfect world every pair of ears have the same sensitivity and response the same way to a given sound, but in the real world however, we all have hearings damaged to various degree at different frequencies. That is especially true for headphoen users.

I don't have the RP-21's but I can chip in a few of my impressions once I get my D2000 sometimes this week. Going to be interesting to see how they go against my HD600
