2007 Micro Amps and Micro DACs - Page 8

Well, I ordered an ultra micro dac, and Mike was extremely accommodating over the phone. More so than he had to be, frankly. And I won't forget it when I have another chunk of change to spend. Anyway, I'm very excited, as this will be my first great dac. I could have bought a Stello or Benchmark for a little bit more, but the ultra micro was just too beautiful. Its obvious even from their other products that lots of work went into building it for both performance and size. Theres something very appealing about a dac that doesn't take up half my desk. That, and it just looks so nice. Every aspect seems to be thought out.

Can't wait to hear it. I hope you guys ship earlier rather than later.

Any word on the exact release date? Will it be closer to oct 1 or oct 15?

Probably looking closer to the 15th at this point!

I will add that everything appears to be nicely on schedule as of this writing for Micro roll-out between Oct1 and Oct15 -- but it never hurts to have a bit of cushion, eh!

Cheers!

From what I've read here, I'm under the assumption that if I'm only making use of the amp, the Ultra Micro will produce better sound than the more expensive Portable Desktop. Is that correct? The reason I ask is that the Portable Desktop is so sexy, but I can't justify the cost to myself if the Ultra Micro will sound better.

While the straight amplification of the ultra micro amp is better than the portable desktop it is always worth noting that no chain is stronger than its weakest link. If your source isn't up to par you might get all the benefits of the better amplification. That said, if you have no intention of using the built in DAC the ultra-micro is probably the better choice. It's still a pretty sexy piece too, so much in such a tiny package!

Hello Bones13,

As of today, all new Micro '07s should be shipping late next week (hopefully!) EXCEPT for the Portable Micro units which are now expected to begin shipping late during the first week of November.

Apologies for the continuing delay here, ya'll ... We're just making sure everything's perfect before we start sending these lovelies around the world!

Cheers,
Jorge

Received my Ultra Micro Amp and DAC this afternoon. Have only been able to listen for a few hours but so far very impressed.

I had a few concerns about going for the micros none of which have materialised. I was worried that the amp wouldn't be able to drive my HD 650s to the level I like to listen (too loud), it does. I was concerned that with so much crammed into such tiny boxes and running class 'A' they would get too hot, they don't. I was also expecting noise to be a problem using them with a PC that has proved noisy with other DACs and amps, but no pops, clicks, or hiss.

Overall, I can't believe the quality and quantity of sound coming out of the small and understated boxes sitting on my desk.

How they compare with other products SQ wise I don't know, as I don't own anything of comparable quality headphone wise, however the set up is pretty close to my main system of AVI CD player and amp, and ATC SMC 50A speakers which is Brit kit so the comparison may not help much.

Looking forward to reading a proper review in due course, and will post an update if anything interesting happens during or after runnning in!

Lucky bastard! For me, being in Europe, the customs caused one day delay and I hopefully have them tomorrow.

I'm in the UK which is almost in Europe (joke!). Fedex delivered in two days, they seem to have some arrangement with UK customs as there never seems to be a delay.

Hope you receive yours tomorrow, I think you'll be impressed.

I think it is just the French. I saw it last night in Paris and then customs clearance exception. Why can't they keep the package going forward so I would have had it today (or yesterday technically, Wednesday.) Timing should support the faster delivery.

My new Micro Ultra DAC was on my desk this morning (thanks again Jorge). I am swapping it into my office system for the Lavry. My shelves are too short for the Lavry with the XLR-RCA adaptors. I have the room on my home unit where it is headed.

Right out of the box though, I prefer the Micro with the Raptor and 650s. Very detailed, and great extension of both treble and bass.

Super product Headroom - congratulations.

Can you give some details on the differences between the Micro Ultra and the Lavry?

I'm considering upgrading to one of the new Micro modules. I'm currently using an Echo Indigo source with an altered Meta42 of a friend's own design (sounds very good for the price I paid for it) out of my laptop but I'm wondering if either the Micro Amp or the Micro DAC would significantly improve my sound quality. I remember hearing the Micro amp at the first national meet and being very impressed - it was the one with the Home module in it, which it seems all of the new ones have. The bass on that amp was insane, frankly.

Anyone familiar with these products who has a recommendation?

The quote above was in response to a question about the digital locking capabilities of the New Portable with DAC option.

I'm very interested in purchasing a New Ultra-Micro DAC, and I have a few questions which make a difference in whether it will do everything I'd like it to do (besides just creating AWESOME analog audio from standard digital streams). I'll apologize in advance for the DAC-un-savvy nature of them. If anyone is willing, I'd surely appreciate an answer to these questions:

1) What are the bit-depth/sampling-rate locking limits (USB and S/PDIF) for the New Ultra-Micro DAC?
If these have already been given, and I've missed them, then I apologize for asking again. A reference to the original answer will give me what I need.

2) To be specific, I've got some computer applications for which my soundcard puts out digital at 16-bit depth/22050 Hz sampling rate. Will the Ultra-Micro DAC USB and S/PDIF lock on this and output analog? Does "up to X" sampling rate mean any sampling rate <= X or does that mean one of a fixed set of commonly used sampling rates <= X?
If it means one of a commonly used fixed set, then what is the list of sampling rates contained in that fixed set?

Thanks very much in advance for any information anyone is willing to offer.
