Nano 1st gen vs 2nd gen SQ?

GF is lookin to get into the whole audio thing (awe crap...my wallet is already yelping). So, I figure a Nano will be just fine for her. Now, on the Apple store, the refurbs, they have both. Is there a SQ difference between the 2 generations listening through UM2s/UM1s amped or unamped? If no difference, I'll just get the 1st gen and save some dough.

How are the HP jacks on there? Crap? I'm just contemplating on diving in head first for her, cause I dunno if she'll be fine with UM1's unamped, or if I should buy her a little Cmoy and ALO....she's not one to grab upgrade-itis, so I'm in luck, I just don't wanna completely short-change her, ya know?

Some people say that they are little differences, but most says that there is no difference.
Personally, I haven't found SQ differences that I could say 'no, it's not placebo, they sound different!'

i'm looking right now, and the 1G and the 2G are both $129 for 4GB. it says "limited time special price" on the 2G, so i'm not sure how long it will last. the 2G has a lot more battery life (24 hours vs 14 for the 1G)

And 2G Nano is also scratchproof. If I were you, I'd buy 2G.

I prefer 2G nano over 1G but I prefer iAudio U3 over both. Is she fixed on only ipods?

Keep in mind that the battery life between charges is much better on the 2nd generation iPod Nano than it is on the 1st generation model ...

Personally, I think the 1st generation Nano is one of the best-looking portable devices I've seen ... but when I needed a 4GB player to supplement my other players, I got the 2nd generation (in silver), for various reasons.

Another alternative in this general category would be the Samsung K3 (really good looking, and its sound quality should be more impressive than the Nano's ... which is certainly not bad).

She's stuck on iPods for the simplicty of iTunes (DAMN YOU APPLE!!!). he's also been a DLing fool on iTunes, so she kinda did it to herself.

My understanding is that the 1st generation nanos have a Wolfson DAC that is considered to be an excellent digital audio converter. The 2nd generation nanos do not. Most of us mere mortals probably would not be able to tell the difference, but it might be good to know you have a good DAC doing the work.

You can search about this on here or just use your favourite search engine to check on a Wolfson DAC.

If she's downloading 128kbps files from iTunes, sound quality can't be that big an issue, so go ahead and get the 2nd generation. The 1st gen.'s are fingerprint magnets and would probably require a case ... money that could be spent on more downloads. With the 2nd gen.'s, you can easily make do quite well with just a square of screen protector over the screen.
