Help: Woo Audio 6 vs. 2

Hey everyone I am starting a new job soon and will likely have some extra money. I am planning on buying a pair of AKG 701's (I have had a chance to audition most companies reference headphones and like these the best). I am specifically concerned in regards to the Woo Audio 2's abilities as a pre-amplifier. I (eventually) plan on getting a decent speaker set up, but I doubt this will be any time soon.
In your opinions would it be worth the extra money to buy the Woo Audio 2 so I could eventually use it as a pre-amplifier, or would it be better just to buy the 6 and cross the pre-amp / power-amp bridge when I have the money to fund a complete setup?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Edit: I am going to be using lossless files through (more than likely) the Firestone Audio Fubar II USB DAC

You can ask Jack to build a preamp into a WA6. He does custom work without a problem. It will cost you a little more but if you want to use the WA6 as a preamp, at least it is a possibility. Otherwise the WA2 looks pretty nice too You really can't go wrong with a Woo Audio amp.

If you have expansion plans then the WA2 is worth every penny.

Here is my WA2 with Tung-Sol 5998 power tubes (an upgrade available from Jack that I highly recommend).



My WA2 is great with all the phones that I have, which include:

Sennheiser HD650
AKG K701
Grado RS-1

I have also commissioned Jack to design and build a pair of 300B monoblock amps for my speaker setup, which will be run from my WA2 preamp. He sent the designs to me a few days ago and I approved them (based on the same chassis design as the WA5). This is an exciting project and I cannot wait to get these amps.

Jerome, I don't know if you composed that shot for the amp and tubes lines to parallel the wallpapers, but I like it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Thanks for the advice. I believe I read somewhere that the upgrade to give the Woo 6 pre-amp capabilities costs around 100$, so I think it would be in my better interest just to save the extra money and get the Woo Audio 2 instead.

I would say the 2 is the biggest bang for the buck. It has a inductor for each side, which is almost like a dual power supply. The sound would have to be dynamic with very good drive capabilities. The amp has three of my favorite tubes, the 6080 family, the great (when done right) 6DJ8 family and the 6X4, which has the 1958 or 59 Tungsol 6X4 WA that is excellent sounding and some prefer it to the great GZ34 rectifiers.

I never took notice of it. I'm more a consumer of art than a creator of it.
