- Sennheiser HD650
- Ultrasone 2500
- AKG K701
- Beyerdynamic DT990

If you were me, which pair would you get and why? They will be powered by an RSA Hornet. Thanks in advance - Jordan

Edit: My musical preferences are extremely various, I listen to everything from classical to hip-hop to black metal to folk rock to electronica to alternative, so cans aimed at just one or two genres are probably not for me. Hope this helps.
haha... i was JUST about to post about the same topic also i keep running into threads that suggest getting grados (i think i might just do that... still not sure) but about your current options... i got no advice cuz i'm a newb... i'll be following your thread tho in case i see some good advice

With the Hornet, I would pick the K701 over the DT990 or HD650. The Hornet (M) has a slightly round, warm, and tubey sound that mates well with the K701 IMO. With most any desktop solid state amp in that pricerange I would say DT990 or HD650, though.

I think he sold his amp.

Out of listed HPs my vote definitely goes for HD650.

But I would also seriously consider new models from Denon - D2000 or D5000 if you are a woody person.

I have the AKG701's, and whilst they definately sound good (after 1 bazillion hours of burn in), I probably wouldn't recommend them unless you had the patience for the burn in :P

I'd also consider Audio Technica, anything from the AD900's up.

Beyerdynamic DT880. Actually it does everything right (possibly to the point of boredom), except bass impact. A spike in highs might be a problem for some, atleast without matching source and amp. Very good headphone IMO in its own way.

AKG K701 is another choice, a headphone that does everything right (again possibly to the point of boredom) but in different sound signature (AKG style) and shouldnt have that sharp treble spike. Good amplifier is needed. No personal experience with this headphone.

Those two cans are considered to be in neutral category. From there you can decide what you might find lacking or what you might need more, be it more bass or warmer sound or whatever.

Beyerdynamic DT-990 is like DT-880 but with very realistic and lively bass impact. Unfortunately highs have even more treble spike, and great bass impact combined with that spike masks the mids a little bit. Good choice, if your ears can stand the spike. My current headphone.
