First full-size cans

I'm about to purchase my first set of decent full-size cans, and I'd appreciate your opinions. I hate these "what should I get" threads, but all my research is doing nothing for me right now in terms of comparison. The 4 sets Im looking into getting are-

- Sennheiser HD650
- Ultrasone 2500
- AKG K701
- Beyerdynamic DT990

If you were me, which pair would you get and why? They will be powered by an RSA Hornet. Thanks in advance - Jordan

Edit: My musical preferences are extremely various, I listen to everything from classical to hip-hop to black metal to folk rock to electronica to alternative, so cans aimed at just one or two genres are probably not for me. Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem as you. It seems the more that i read the harder the choice becomes. The only thing that i can add to make matters worse is that the dt880s seem popular. This is probably as useful as a chocolate fireguard, sorry.

What type of music do you listen to?

+1 that would help us decide on what would be best.

It's hard to know what I would get if I were you since I don't know your preferences, regarding musical and sonic taste etc. You will only find out what other people with other preferences prefer as themselves with no deeper knowledge than this.

Need to know more information about your music preference as well.

That's easy! If you want to be on stage with the performers get MS2i. If you want to be back a few rows; get the HD600!

....well....works for ME anyway.

Yeah; we need more info.

In addition to music styles /genre, what do you like listen for in the music?
What instruments do you favor?
What about their sound do you find you listen for when you hear those instruments?

I have found that it can often be about timbre and texture.

I believe he listens to metal if i'm not mistaken.

And if that's the case, then i'd go Grado(?) with bowl pads.

x2, assuming rock/metal is preferred. Any of the entry level Grado/Alessandro models are decent choices, namely SR-60, SR-80, & MS-1.

No experience with the Hornet amp though...but the Grados above don't really require them IMO.

Never heard them, but given those choices I would be tempted to try the new DT990s.

If your going for a fullsize you'd want to go for something with full bass like the Dt990 or the HD-650. For me bass can really make or break a big purchase.

Of the 4 listed, I would pick the HD650 for your wide tastes on my ears. Outside of the four on a similar budget, I'd pick the Ergo 2 which is also much easier to drive, perhaps advantages given you shall be using a Hornet.

If I had to choose from that list, I would get the HD650. I have not heard the Ultrasone 2500, and the K701 and DT990 had not so good sound, to my ears.

Looking at the IEMs in your signature, I would think the HD650 or DT990 is a good starting point.

The ultrasones and AKG aren't really a sonic match for the UM2 and E5. If you had listed ER-4 in your profile, then maybe the K701 is more your style.
