Amp deal of the century....

....according to the below thread at the forum at Club Polk Audio

http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51953

Based on the link in the original post, looks like the amp is still available in various Radio Shack stores. I think I will swing by my local Shack and see if I can pick one up.

Very interesting... The specs are a little disheartening, though. For another $15, you can get the oft-recommended Sonic Impact T-Amp, which states 102 dB SNR as opposed to the Accurian's >50 db.

Still, I might pick up one just for fun.

I posted the same info over at the Steve Hoffman website and there has been a good amount of activity on the thread. Check it out....

Wow... People sure are emphatic about getting a good deal...

Now all of my vinyl sounds good thanks to the tone controls. This really is the amp deal of the century...
Something seems a little fishy when a guy with $1,000+ pairs of speakers (Sonus Faber Concertino, Sonus Faber Grand Piano) raves about a $11 amplifier with a SNR spec'd at roughly 50 dB...

THanks for the tip!
very tempting..... and my local shack has two of them in stock, with "possible additional discounts".

The only thing is I can go to Thrift stores and get a real 80's 65W+65W receiver for $15, no mods needed, and probably sounds better than the RS micky-mouse amp. Judging from the pictures the RS amp is not too much smaller than my Kenwood either.

I think I'd pass.

For $11, I figured, why not? I purchased one at Radio Shack this afternoon... Pictures and review forthcoming.

I'm finished with the "mods" to make it usable as a stereo receiver. Some things to note:

Plan on using very small gauge speaker wire. 16 or 18 AWG seems like the maximum size that will fit into the stock terminals.

The designer didn't consider that the Left and Right terminals need to be reversed to lead properly out of the back of the receiver. As they are, the speaker wires need to be crossed to reach the proper speakers.

About sound quality... For $11, it's almost impossible to beat (considering that there's no competition!). At that price point, I'm happy that it works at all. Does it compare to any of my other amplifiers or receivers? Not even close. It has the veiled sound that comes with buying cheap equipment, but it does seem to have a reasonable amount of power.

Some people will pay thousands and thousands of dollars for veiled sound *cough*son*ahem*fab*kaf

I don't really need another project. Maybe I'll acquire some to mess around with. That's for the heads up.

Just got one today, did the mods (really easy) and used it for a setup in my bedroom. Given that I used to have: Sony CD Walkman (through line out) > (bad) powered computer speakers and now I have: Sony Walkman (through line out) > $11 Accurian amp > bookshelf speakers, I am extremely happy with the quality. Thanks soundboy for the info.

I had some fun looking around inside and modding it, but I already have too many receivers...

Anyone care to buy my carefully-modified Accurian HomePlug Receiver?

I bought a few and hooked up a couple Head-Fiers. Did you guys get the matching Digital Audio Sender. 14 bucks. I scored.
