DT770 bass response - Page 2

I've had a pair of Labtec ear cup headphones I've used happily for the last 6 years or so but recently the pads started to disintegrate and finally one of the cups snapped off. So it was time to upgrade.

I read a ton of reviews and narrowed my selection down to the Sennheiser HD280 Pros and the Beyer DT 770/80s. My selection criteria involved cost, the need for the cans to be closed (for listening at work), and relatively low impedance so my Dell laptop could drive them easily.

After listening to the Senns and the DT 770s on the kid at Guitar Center's Ipod I very obviously chose the Beyerdynamics.

Everyone talks about the overwhelming bass response of these headphones but I just don't hear it. I do consider myself sensitive to bass. Really, I can't stand overwhelming bass. But given the tame (yet punchy) nature of the bass out of my DT 770s I'm starting to wonder if something's wrong here.

Is there any chance I got a bad set of headphones? Is it more likely that I'm just not as sensitive to bass as I thought I was? Or is it possible that the crappy sound card in my Dell just isn't capable of bringing out this feature? Is there any definite way to tell?

I did order a basic CMOY (w/ burr brown amps and a rail splitter) amp for cheap (guess I could have gotten the high impedance DT 770s) that I'm hoping will make the answer I seek more obvious but in the mean time feedback is appreciated.
Your Dell sound card is almost certainly not up to the task (unless it's the older Dell Turtle Beach), and you should get an improvement with an amp. But, and this is a big but...

Generally speaking, bass is a topic you need to take with 8 shakers full of salt on these forums. It's very strongly dependent on taste, and even phones that are reputedly "bass monsters" sound thin in comparison to what I (and generally non-audiophiles) consider "bass monsters" (i.e., GS1k with flats and 7db of bass boost out of a balanced M3). So, don't expect the bass to increase tremendously with any amp. You will find EQing to help a lot more in that regard.

a CMoy with gain of 11 should be fine, maybe even gain of 6.

Wow, thanks for all the great replies and conversation.

I'm an electrical engineer by profession so I'll probably end up putting together an amp of my own but have been strapped for time lately and wanted something quick (hence ordering the CMOY).

I'm really excited to see what the CMOy does for me. Even if it's not my end solution it'll have to be an improvement over what I'm getting out of this Dell right now. (It's a Precision M90 w/ on board 8 channel SigmaTel HD audio)

Just wanted to say that the CMoy definitely changed my perspective of the bass capabilities of these cans. Using the CMoy the bass is super punchy. Only occasionally when listening to certain hip-hop tracks is it a bit overwhelming.

congrats! i remember back in the day plugging straight into an ipod and thinking the DT770 was not all that - but plugging even into a dinky cmoy brought the BASS - perhaps not as focused or as majestic as other beefier amps with more headroom, but it does give a better inkling of the potential of these cans.

Grats! What op-amp came with the CMoy? Did you buy it here? From a eBay seller? Build it your self?

It's a PenguinAmp, I got it on sale for just over $40 shipped. The site says it's a Burr Brown OPA2134.

I actually am having some problems with the right channel at low volume so he's shipping me a new one right now.

While the CMoy has been a big improvement over the laptop's driving capabilities I know it's certainly not the most exciting amp out there. I didn't expect it to be. It was a good cheap place for me to start. I'm sure I'll be come addicted and drop a few hundred bucks into this endeavor in no time flat.

The Darth Beyers are calling, but I need to upgrade the source of my sound first.

Glad you are happy with the DT770/80 now that you have some power behind them.

I was reading through this thread with the intention of telling you to wait for your amp. I know that my DT770/80 don't really have the sub-bass output that makes them fun without an amp.
