DIY Cable for Equation Audio RP 21

Thread Starter
I'd be interested in paying someone to put together a high end cable for Equation PR 21 that would:

1) shorten the length of the stock Equation Audio 21 cable (3 meters is too long for portable use) and...

2) possibly improve the sound of the stock.

Keep in mind the 21 (and all EA HPs) have a specific twist/ lock 3.5mm cable attachment which would need to be implemented on one end.

I am def. not a DIYer so I have no idea.

Please PM with details, if its something you could do...

Can you take a picture of the jack and and the plug at the headphone just to clear up any ambiguities?

The jack is pretty normal - just a CUI-Stack panel mount 3.5mm jack.

The headphone housing has a notch into which little tabs on the barrel of the connector lock in. The method is identical to Fostex headphones, not that you've ever seen one of those either. I can probably find a picture.

The issue you run into is that the size of the barrel is restricted by the size of the opening on the earcup - needs to be less than 8mm iirc, and you'd be surprised how hard that is to achieve. A Neutrik NYS212 is bigger than that.

You have the option of foregoing the twist-lock and just using a normal 3.5mm plug, like the HD485. In fact, the HD485 cable works fine in the RP-21 and does not fall out.

If you insist on using your own connector, there is a chinese connector of unknown provenance sold by markertek and calrad and various others that measures a scant 7mm across the barrel. I have one and it seems 'ok' if a bit uninspired in design.

Original connector looks like this:

You could potentially take the calrad plug and add something like a lock washer with all but two of the teeth lopped off . . . .

I'd experiment with this myself but i don't actually have these cans. And don't listen to cables.

Thanks for putting the pics up ericj.

You should be able to get one of Turbo, Fitz, HighFlying, AkZip, etc. to build you a 1.5 meter mini to mini.

I actually already tried with Fitz. He wasn't sure about the attachment. I think if I were to do it- I would want them to attach in the same way as the stock. I would hate to pay the money for a good cord, only to have them fall out from time to time. In the meantime I bought the coiled cord- I just fear the SQ will not be as good.

That's redbeardatxm's gallery - he's a good friend of mine, and was the first head-fi member to have a pair of these, though not the first to mention them.

Like i said, it might be possible to add teeth to the calrad connector so it will lock in like the factory connector. Would require some minor fabrication and a bit of glue. Won't look real professional, but hey, it'll be inside your headphones.

If i can remember to bring the calrad plug with me the next time i head to the hardware store, i can pick up bits to experiment with that.

Someone really ambitious could probably install a mini-xlr jack on the equation earcup and use an AKG K240S cable, but that might require carving up the interior of the earcup a bit.

You can always shorten the cable you have.

If your only care is convenience, yeah. Or get the RP15mc cable and shorten that, as it's thinner.

just like mrarroyo said, shorten the cable. its very simple, just buy a mini-trs jack from Qables.com, cut your cable to desired length, and solder the connector on.

I'm looking into doing this, so here's my attempt at ressurecting this thread and seeing if anyone has had any success or any new info on all this.

Thanks!
