After the SoCal AV123 meet, I can heartily recommend AV123's x-SLS 2-way floorstanders at $319/pair NEW! My impressions here.

Those look neat. How do they compare with other speakers in the under $500 category? How deeps the bass?

Whoa, $319 / pair? Great price point! No other floorstanders come to mind. Only goes down to 45 Hz though, which means that a subwoofer is still required for the last octave.

It would be interesting to find out the cost to ship across the USA.

How loud can those get?

For music, and I mean "real" music not synthesized 20 Hz stuff, X-SLS has plenty of bass for me. What's even better, the cabinet is mass-loadable with sand, etc.

But if you must have more bass, the X-MTM uses same drivers, just more of them in bigger cabinet, leading to even higher sensitivity (90.5 dB/w/m) and loudness capability. There's a pic of X-MTM and X-SLS side by side I found on AV123. Oh, the X-MTM is $449/PAIR!

Any idea how the X-MTM's sound compared to the Ascend CMT-340 SE, Axiom M22 v2, or Axiom M50 v2?

I've never had a chance to listen to any of these brands, but when I get a chance to upgrade from my Athena Point 5's, I will probably look at something along these lines since they are all highly recommended companies.

Thanks in advance.

which one did you like more between the x-sls and x-mtm?

also, how well did these handle vocals, i would like to build a home theater system around these, but LOATHE speakers that make it difficult for me to hear the people talking.

Shouldn't your center channel be taking care of most of the dialog anyway?

Real music? Electronic is real music to me, plus think about organs, and Telar cannons...This is why I take reviews about 'bass' from audio people with a grain of salt. Just because the lowest frequency range is one of the biggest pains to get right, isn't an excuse to just forget about it. I remember reading a stereophile review that praised the bass response of some speakers because their -3db point was 50hz. 50hz! Bass doesn't even start till 50hz. I've resigned myself to the fact that a subwoofer is a necessity, period. It's good to have mains with good bass, though, because subwoofer integration becomes very easy when the crossover point is low.

It's great to see some cheapish floorstanders geared for music out there, though. When I move out of this tiny apartment I'll probably be in the market. I have Energy C3 stand speakers.

In my book, bass starts at about 250hz. Very little goes on in the first octave and a half that doesnt sound like rumble. It's more important to get the 50-250hz right - you can add a sub at any time but the mains have to be able to keep up.

I'm asking myself the same question! I listened to the X-SLS powered by good SS amp, and the combo was simply fantastic, and for me to say that, the system HAS TO reproduce life-like vocals.

The problem is I listened to the X-MTM's in a different room powered by 30 some watt tube amp, whose sound I know to be a bit too tubey for my tastes. I strongly suspect if the X-MTM's were powered by the same SS amp, it would have been killer, but you can't truly tell without trying it. Heck, for only around $100 more, the MTM does look like a great bargain as well.
