Okay i've had a look around at all the suggestions and so far am interested in the Sennheiser PX100, Grado SR-60 and Alessandro MS-1's.

What do you reckon i should go for taking into account I listen to metal of my MP3 player and isolation and portability don't really matter?

PS. I tried looking for Philips HP 1000 but couldn't really find it, sounds a bit expensive anyway judging from people's reactions.

Considering your criteria and budget, it is a no brainer IMO - A used pair of Grado SR-60s. If you keep an eye on the 'Headphones For Sale' thread here at Head-Fi, you should easily be able to score a pair (including shipping and paypal fees) for well within your $75 budget. If you can bump your budget to $99, then you can score a new pair of Alessandro MS-1s. I believe they are $99 shipped to anywhere in the world (please someone correct me if I am wrong).

With either of those phones, you will more than likely be so happy with how they sound with your music being driven by your MP3 player that you will stand up and do a cartwheel, followed by a dance similar to the ones done by the people on those iPOD commercials, followed by uncontrollable head-banging.

Ask me how I know.

Good luck with whatever phones you end up with.

I know! I know!

....of course I've learned to do my head banging side to side cause my MS2i are too heavy and fall off too easily!

HAHA!

Yeah you have to be careful with those beasts, you could inadvertently give yourself some whiplash, or worse - they could fly off and injure the dog or smash in the side of a fish tank. The PS-1s are even worse!

You might also consider the Grado SR-80. I find it agreeable with metal and out of the headphones I have, it gets the third most use, after the a950 and a900.

Seeing that the MS-1 is some sort of religion around here I realise i may well get lynched for asking this but I heard they were pretty much upgrades of the Grado SR-60's. Are they good enough to justify the extra price?

Oh and how do you know? (Whoever told me to ask)

get the AKG k 26P. 50 bucks and has a really good sound for metal, rock, classical.....they are really good, comfory is weak, but hey when you are in a line at the atm machine and you need to deposit you pay check and you hace to "pinch a loaf" or go poo poo, it is a little not so comfy, but you have to deal with it because your next in line to deposit that money....so i would get the k 26p, dirty fun canz....

...couldnt disagree more with K26P and metal. K26P midbass boom is way too loud and muddies mids and highs totally = no no for guitars.

Both SR-60 and MS-1 have the comfy pads.

The SR-60 has a relatively expensive to produce and install ID button. The MS-1 does not.

The SR-60 has a 1/8" terminated three wire cable. The MS-1 has a four wire unit and can be ordered with either 1/8" or 1/4" connector.

The SR-60 uses SR-60 materials; the MS-1 uses upgraded SR-125 stuff.

The SR-60 has a sensitivity of 98db; the MS-1 is 100.

They have different drivers so they sound different. Is one better than the other in SQ? I dunno.

Umm..okay. I didn't really get the whole pooing at an ATM metaphor but i think its come down to a straight shootout between the Alessandro MS-1 and the Grado SR-60's.

Actually; other than the over-all sound, it's closer to an MS-1/SR-125 shootout.
