Has Anyone Heard of the Sony D-10? (Pic Included)

Digging through my dad's pile of old electronics is always fun, and today I happened to come across an old CD player (circa 1987) called the D-10. Luckily, my dad is a bit of a pack rat and keeps just about everything he gets, so I was able to easily locate the battery and charger, both of which still worked. First thing I noticed about the CD player is the weight - this thing is a monster, and feels like you could run over it in a tank and have it survive with flying colors. Encouraged, I put in Dark Side of the Moon. The thing starts up fast and reads almost instantaneously, and all of the controls function perfectly. It sounds extremely detailed, analytical, and bass lean, but not neccessarily dry. It's good enough to suffice as my main CD player until I can buy a replacement, but let me say that I'm extremely impressed all around. One more thing of note is the power of the headphone output. I turned the dial all the way down before plugging in my RS-1's, but when I pressed play I had to double check to make sure that I really did lower the volume. Seriously, on "Min," the lowest the CD player can go, my RS-1's were at a comfortable volume, and one time or another I actually wished I could turn it down even further. Sure Grado's are an efficient pair of headphones, but I'd be willing to bet that the D-10 could drive even K701's with authority.

Anyways, I was just curious to see if anyone else had or knew about this CD player - it truly is a little gem.

Judging by the exterior modelling, button positions, etc., this looks like a close precursor of the stupendous, audiophile-quality D-25 (which I am lucky enough to own) - a real little beauty. Thanks very much for sharing your impressions of this player; I understand it is one of the rarest nowadays.

Going by your comments on the power and quality of the headphone out, this unit more than likely shares much of the same circuitry as its successor, the D-25. The latter drives my HD650s through the headphone jack as if it were a full-size unit _with_ amp, and gives my reference system - CA Azur 640C --> OBH 21-SE --> HD650s - a real run for its money.

Since acquiring it, I actually prefer the PCDP over my reference source.

Thanks to your useful comments. I shall definitely be looking out for one of these babies.

What's with all the damn thread necromancy?

I beg your pardon? - I was simply stating an opinion and supplying what extra info I could.

And, yes, it's true that I now prefer the D-25 over all that I've heard in the past, including my reference source. I imagine the D-10 is somewhat similar. The PCDPs of the 1980s certainly run rings around anything produced today for under 1000 USD, IMHO.

Been listening to Mahler and Sibelius - superbly engineered recordings - and the output is simply incredible from the D-25's headphone out.

I don't even need to bother with an amp, though I have tested line-out through a Total Bithead (disappointing, and far inferior to the Sony's HP out)

But this is D-10 thread, not a D-25 discussion, so I will now exit quietly...

Nothing wrong with bumping old threads. This kind of info doesn't get old or anything like it. And the player looks fine.

I'm surprised this kind of quality opening didn't raise any further discussion back then.

The D-10 is a classic pcdp...I believe the op has a great find on his hands. New doesn't necessarily mean...better.
