Fasten your seat belt......check this out - Page 3

ok, the sound....

first of all, we all have to remember these are KSC55 drivers, installing them into OPEN style wood housings will not transform them into Beyers. I believe if it is a open style, where wood or plastic housing should not make that much a difference (but the housing shape/form will). Stiff aluminum might be a different story though.

Sound stage: the woodied KSC55's are definitly more open. With the neckbanded KSC55, the singer is singing from one point between my ears, with the woodied..... the image is larger, somewhere close to my forhead area. you can compress this image by covering the openning, covering more = more like the stock KSC. I am not experienced with reviewing, really don't know how to descript the difference, it is kind of like the difference between a marble size(neckband) and a tennis ball (woody)... .?
Anyway, "more open" for sure, whatever that means.

Bass-wise, the woody has the same deepth (how low it will go), but has less in quantity. Still very impactful thanks to the KSC55 driver's innate bass response. If you think the KSC55 is too bassy then the Woody might be just right, just a little stronger than the stock KSC75.

mids and treble : I think the neckband 55 is slightly brighter, and the woody has a little more mids......Again, I am not experienced with reviewing stuff, this impression might also be the result of the changed sound stage.... the woody vocal sounds less "intimate" (sound stage or FR?), but it seems to be a....."sibilance killer" ? It even made Fiona Apple's slow like honey sound kind of smooth, much smoother than with the neckband 55.....Not sure if that is a good thing or not, the smoothness might be the result of losing minute details, though I have not noticed any detail lost comparing to the neckbanded 55.

Comparing to my iGrado (quarter modded, no foam pads behind drivers):
the iGrado is brighter. The major strength of iGrado is its smoothness (otherwise I don't know strength it's got), now the woody KSC is at least as smooth, if not slightly smoother than iGrado. And the woody KSC has the "real" bass that the iGrado lacks......... If the woody KSC can be made brighter (don't know how, EQ maybe?) it will definitly kick iGrado's.....aXX...............well, just my oppinion. I prefer this woody KSC over my iGrado anyway
(It should be noted that I don't like the iGrado's much anyway, the reason I still have them is they make great guitar headphones, sound just right when plugged into a guitar amp...)

Maybe I need to take the KSC woody to the Seattle meet next weekend, so someone more qualified can write a "real" review........if somebody can provide a balanced amp with two XLR->mini adaptors that is (do such adaptors exist?)........

Hehe, yea, I like the fact that it is balanced (with 3.5mm mini plugs )

Awsome mod!!!

It is understandable this was to be a quick&dirty way to fit the KSC55 drives into some sort of woood housings (these rings are not the best wood to use, but they were there and convenient to mod). I really didn't expect everybody to like it.....

Guys, the real thing is not as nice as it looks in the pictures: brass discs on the rings look cheap, (and the rings were cheap$,).....the Koss TD60 headband is thin and uses cheap looking fake leather...The original KSC55 cables are tin and fragile....
Everything was just thrown together with minimum work, once you see the tutorial you will realize how micky-mouse it was.....

Somebody need to make a REAL ksc woody with machined fancy wood and Grado style metal/leather headband, thick custom cables with XLR ends.....

About the sound: my review might sound like the woodied KSC55 is a improvement over the stock one. It is not so. It is different, I don't necessary say I prefer the woody over the original. I said I prefer the woody over the iGrado because the ksc woody is smooth and I have always thought the iGrado lack real bass....

The woody KSC's sound charactor is not yet set. These wood rings are actually too deep so they sound differently when stuffed wtih different type of foam material. Without foam, the sound is very open, has great bass, but also has detectable echo. To kill the echo I have tried low density foam (the blue/yellow kitchen foam, blue=left, yellow=right), but that also reduced bass. Still experimenting with foams. This kind of housing might be considered as the semi-open style? To me, this is harder to tune than the closed/sealed type (I suppose the real open style doesn't require tuning at all)......

One last glamor shot, before the "nasty reality" tutorial......

Wow... (speechless)

I can just imagine a perfectly made/machined KSC 75 woody

There should be a Head Fi medal for this sort of thing! The Moddus Supremus medal....

Do Koss know how much they spark innovation w/ their lower end phones?!

Try to cut out a hole in the foam that covers the drivers, it will bring out some upper detail.

I'm with Gurra.

I'm impressed on your skills of modding the thing...

But am I the only one that finds the headphones to look repulsive and stupid? No offense to you, of course.

dude, you are not the only one... .. I didn't like those napkin rings too much either, but I already got them and the wood grain looks nice enough, might as well use them. Not that much work was involved after all.... Whether one likes the drum style wood ring is more of a personal taste thing, I think it is ok, some might think it is way cool and some won't like it at all.........

Now this first KSC woody attempt has been done, I hope the woody wheel is now turning and somebody will crank out some really nicely put together KSC woodies pretty soon.....Can't wait to see

Harsh. I think some silver napkin holders would look splendid, though. MS-255, whoo-hoo.
