Stello DA100 (show-off/impressions thread) - Page 15

Would you choose this over a Channel Island DAC?

I was making plans to make the Cambridge Audio 840C my next source/DAC.
From the specs, would anyone care to postulate whether the DA100 Signature would be a better DAC than that found in the 840C?

Postulate - no, 840c upsamples even higher. Can't tell without hearing though...

Meh, Stello uses same chip as the one that Alex Peychev swears by, but that means jack since implementation is vastly different.

DA100 Signature converts the usb input to SPDIF and then to I2S.
This is from a reply I got from hifi500.com representative. Cost is $895 with free shipping in USA. Incredibly tempted right now.

I haven't heard the VDA-2 but both the DA100 and the VDA-2 were at this mini-meet:

I can say that I am very impressed with the DA100 and it is very musical.

confirmed! exactly got the same answer :"DA100 converts the usb input to SPDIF and then to I2S"
is it good or less good in a way a direct usb to i2s would be better?
MaloS, I couldn't resist .- I see you have a consonnance A120 linear...I have the CD120 linear that DA100 will replace if hopefully better. Any thought on this issue of this match?

I'd buy it if I could afford it without putting myself into a very tight budget, heh...

USB->I2S is better than with SPDIF as an intermediate stage.

That doesn't make sense. What is the point of an extra step, just USB->SPDIF would be better as it's just two.
So far the only advantage over the old model that I can see is a balanced output, which I have no plans to realize anyway, not in this year at least.

My guess would be that it makes it easy to switch between the various inputs (the rest of which are are all SPDIF), as they get converted to I2S in the receiver chip. Having one input be I2S while the others are SPDIF, could get messy for that sort of thing.

It depends on whether the new CD Transport also provide I2S output.
