I don't have a context to respond with an answer. Sorry. I think jamato8 though has address this issues.

It is the gain stage that you needed increased since you are getting less than normal output voltage, from what I understand. With my Monica II dac I get around 1.5 volts out which is less than the normal 2 volts so I need more on an amp to operate around 10 or 12 oclock on the volume pot but I prefer as little volume pot in the signal path as possible so I just use most amps around 3 oclock. This has nothing to do with headroom although some feel they get better dynamics with higher gain settings.
Thanks for your help. When/If I decide to get the Reference, I'll be sure to ask Dr. Xin to up the gain a bit.

I plan ro put my name on the list for one of these as soon as I can.

One thing I keep wondering about is the supply voltage. Most portable amps use a 9v battery and there are those who think that they can never produce a voltage swing that is enough for some cans. The Xin Refence has only 6v available (4 x AAA), yet some are saying that it is comparable in sound quality to a home amp. Does this mean that our concerns about the adequacy of 9v batteries in most portables are unfounded - or what?

It is irritating to be still waiting for my SuperMacro IV to arrive after two months thinking he is just one guy and is probably hard at work filling back orders, but no, he has been working on a new product. Ticks me off.

What will it be like in August when the Reference is released, I wonder? When Dr. Xin is in "production" mode, is the wait still 3-4 months?
I think I rember seeing Xin say somewhere that when he is in full production mode he can do about 50 amps a week but I might be wrong. Obviously I have no idea what the actual order backlog is nor how many upgrade amps are waiting.

I'm assuming that by the time we get to August, August will have slipped to September. I shall order one as soon as possible, but I think I would be doing well to have one in my hand before Christmas.

I'm just itching for my SuperMicro IV. I can't keep carrying my Go-Vibe 5 around anymore. It's a pain to get both that and the iMod in my jeans at the same time. I ended up dropping the iMod by accident on the bus because of that, and it is severely bruised I'm hoping Brasso will save me...

minibox may be a better choice.. ^-^

I've held off on sending my SuperMacro IV in for the very latest updates for similar reasons as it would annoy me no end to possibly be without it for up to 3 months . Especially if i knew that Dr.Xin was prioritising his new product rather than fullfilling back orders/ updates first .

Yohoo,

Mr Xin finally added the 'Add to cart' button. So orders can be made. I ordered mine. So let the long wait begin.

Dr. Xin has always been a wizard when it comes to battery improvisation. The first time I heard about SuperMicro-IV, I was in disbelief that a SINGLE AAA battery could produce such a big sound. So if Xin Reference is going to be powered by not one but 4 AAA, you can bet it will outclass most 9V operated amps easily

....as his Supermacro LE already does (yes, I have one - with 4/11 birthdate). My order is already in for Reference amp. with 1/4 and 1/8 outs option.

Wating for mine too, what option did you get EFN?
The 4 AAA vs 9 volt has more to do with the amp's impedance and therefore the damping factor relationship between the amp and headphone driver. High damping better control.
