New Xin Reference Amp by Dr. Xin !!! - Page 23

I agree with you about the across the board quality of amps, but I don't recall the bass on Krall sounding muddy when I listened to it directly; it could be an artifact of recording it to a computer with a mediocre sound card.

What a creative and great contribution to the forum. I listened to the first set of samples. I'm looking forward to getting home and hearing this next installment (but I've got to work late).

I've got the Micro on order and will probably stick with it because of its small size. But it is great to get a sense of the new amp.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Listen between 9 -12 seconds into the cut. There is a bass note that is harder to differentiate on the new reference, hence, my comment.

By the way, in listening to the original samples I thought that the mp3s labeled Millett sounded overall the best. I was thinking that this was full desktop amp that was thrown in as a reference. But now I suspect that it is the Millett Hybrid postable amp. Is this correct? If so what do you think about this amp's sound quality "in person" as compared to the Xin Micro or the Reference?

It's the portable millett, which is currently my favorite portable amp.

That's enviably high praise, given the other amps you have available and the thoughtful high regard you've expressed toward them.
<vorlon1 responded in a PM to an OT question I'd originally posted - many thanks>

Back to the central thread theme, because I'm just as much on the edge of my seat to read about the next Xin Reference development as are all the rest of the readers of this thread.

i also received a beta xin reference amp and my initial impression is that the amp has a larger soundstage and bass impact than my tomahawk with 500+ hours on it.... it was fairly impressive considering that my xin amp only has about 10 hours on it.

mrarroyo, did you have to pay for the new xin reference board?
... Hey Aluren ... I'll probably be ordering a Xin amp soon ... I'm torn between the SuperMicro IV and the new "Reference" ... Based on your initial impressions, would it be safe to bypass the SMIV and just get the reference seeing that it's basically an upgraded SMIV ? ... Or do you think I should 'play it safe' and get a SMIV: a tried-and-true proven device ? ... This is my first amp purchase and I'd like to make the best decision (with no experience and no current access to sampling) ... It's probably best that I just be patient while developments on the Reference emerge; Keep those updates coming folks !! ... Thanks ...

BlazingArrow - you need not worry about the worthiness of the Reference. But, there are other considerations - whatever 'phones you're using need to synergize with whatever amp you buy, the form-factor of the amp, what signature you want from your amp etc.. It would be helpful to you if you at least included some info. in your profile (that's one of the reasons it exists).......or in this instance, provided some info. as to both your music and equipment in the post.

Grasshopper, you are misguided. Soon you will see the light. Actually the sound out of the TTVJ Millet is very nice, top 5 to me but not top 3. Currently my top 3 are Supermicro IV, LaRocco PRII MkII, and SR71. However, Dr. Xin's Reference Amp is looking to take over as the #1 spot at the rate it is going.

BTW, I have been in discussions with goto2003 and Dr. Xin and guess what? A final tweak has been incorporated since you you heard the board yesterday. A new board incorporating the change is being shipped to me and hope it gets here by Saturday so you can listen to it. My only regret is that the Reference Amp will not have much burn in for the Florida Meet on 6/9 and 6/10 so the big cap settles.
so this will be the second board that you're getting?
Yes, there is the one that originally came with it, then there is the one he put in yesterday, and then this even newer one that is on the way.

... So much for impressions ...

... Hey ... I know things are "top secret" with you Beta Testers, but I'm curious to know just what kind of feedback you're giving Dr. Xin ... I'm not asking for any numbers here, just what kinds of comments are you making and what kind of tweaking is being made ... ? ... I read a comment that suggested the newest board sounds more tube-like akin to the SuperMicro-IV ... What's the next board (just shipped) supposed to address ?

The value in a couple of caps (not the large 15,000 uF) is being changed. BTW the interior of the amp is also being tweaked for the better. For example in a picture I posted earlier it had a piece of red tape over the big 15,000 uF cap. Well that is being replaced with a couple of foam pieces inside the case which will hold the cap and the batteries in place much better. Here is a pic of the new foamp pieces.

Has anyone here heard the new Lisa III? Word is it is amazing! No price set yet but I'm sure it will be much more then the reference. Seems like we are all in for treats in the next coming months
