Broken MDr7506

My MDR7506 spontaneously stopped working yesterday. The cord got tugged a bit around the jack, and it was as though it were pulled out altogether; the sound just cut out and wouldn't come back no matter how much I tugged, massaged, and jiggled that cord.

Should I recable them myself? I don't really mind, I hated the coiled cord anyway. How intense is that repair? Should I try to send them to Sony? What would sony do with my wonderful beyer pads?

They're pretty new headphones, and I love them. Is that a doable recable job for a novice, and if so, what tools/cables do I need?

Thanks a lot, guys.

From what I hear, Sony repairs are expensive. To recable your phones, you would need a soldering iron, solder, and heatshrink at the least. For wire, you could use mini starquad. That's the simplest recable job I can think of.

I wonder how a V6/7506 with mini Star-Quad recable would work, since they have single input not a Y cable.

If you want to keep it single-sided, you could do that.

How intense a repair is this for a beginner? It looks like I lost the receipt, so no warranty repair. Is there anyone else I can take it to?

Thanks again.

I just did a recable on it out of frustration with the cans. It's not really difficult. Assuming that you don't have the parts, I'd say it'd cost about $30. Just search for a guide to soldering or recabling. If you can't find one on head-fi, I'm sure there's one elsewhere.
