New iMod for the iPod 5G: A Red Wine Audio/ALO Collaboration - Page 5

Does this mean that there will be an iMod for all future generations? What about nanos?

That would be a wonderful idea really, the ipods have such great market penatration and support, we just need someone to undo all the @#~$ surrounding each of their DAC's. Like has been done with the imod 4th gen.

Im gonna see what the reactions are to the 5.5G imod, and then consider whether to get that, or a Micro DAC (btw, does anyone know if the iMod 4th gen sounds on par or better than the Micro DAC?)

Thanks

This is some great news I can't wait.

I've got an extra 80GB 5.5 Gen ready for a mod and am very interested in what develops here. I'll be watching...

Is Vinnie also offering options to switch out the 4g iPod's harddrive too? 'Cause that would be awsome! My CD collection is nearing my iPod's capacity... I'm still "thinking" about the iMod, though...

I'm not sure if he'll only swap hard drives, but if you do decide to have your iPod iModded, he swaps the hard drive and battery for free since your iPod has to be opened anyway. You need to send him the new hard drive and battery, though.

Would a 60GB harddrive work in my iPod? It's a 20GB iPod 4g Color Display. I mean, having a 60GB harddrive in a 20GB model? Would the software/firmware/etc. freak out and not accept it, etc.?

You'd have to ask Vinnie about that, or check the hard drive vendors for info. My guess is that it won't fit in a 20GB.

Your 20gb ipod 4G would not be able to accept the thicker double-platter 60gb harddrive as it has a slimmer enclosure.

In a word, there, there. No one who possess both lobes would suggest that open questions like yours are untoward. Furthernow, there's no point in discouraging you from expressing honest interest. As your chiropodist, I suggest that you drink more fluids so as not to fall prey to that pernicious pathology known as Internet Forum Paranoia Disorder. (On a side note: Kevin Trudeau claims "Swedish doctors" have been curing IFPD with calcium supplements.)

The problem, Mr. Just-Say-Yes-to-Purposeful-Copulation, is Pacino-esque closing questions beginning with phrases like "WHEN will the fool who buys this ever realize . . ." or "How DARE Red Wine Audio/ALO charge [invented sum] for [unverified option] as part of their [completely separate] iMod when there are [hypothetical number] of [unnamed companies] willing to [expletive denoting barnyard joy] for [unprecedented use of secondary muscle group]!?!?"

Even polite posts like the following tend to visit the world of E.C. Tubb:

"LOL" indeed, since your question can't be serious. Yes, dinky drive capacity and dinkier DAC resolution will continue to improve over a nebulous period of time. No, the history of the iPod doesn't dictate that a new iPod with a larger drive and new features will use a better DAC. Yes, the 6G or some later iteration might be offered with a 120GB HD, which is of course the point of most journalists' speculation concerning the Samsung announcement in the first place.

However, obsessing over the possibility of a brave new DAC by "freak chance," or the cost and practicality of the implementation of a hard drive that doesn't even exist in consumer terms, the installation of which is merely being considered as a possible perk, has very little to do with the announced 5G iMod or the concerns of audiophiles who are considering it. You yourself are interested in practical sonic improvement, are you not? If so, then let's agree to forgo the Head-fi equivalent of doomsday tabloid telly.

Less constructive responses are another nostril entirely.

No previous iMod buyer appears to have made a purchasing decision based on the secondary installation of batteries or anything else. Thus, when confused "WHAT'S-ALL-THIS-I-HEAR-ABOUT-SOLDIERS-PARADING-AROUND-ON-VETERINARIAN'S-DAY!?" humegaphones complain about the fictitious and unlikely extra cost of possibly installing an unavailable HD, it results in the unfriendly derailment of this thread via a vast flopping red herring.

Tittering shut-ins are advised to get their Three Card Monty on in the latest I'm-Not-Affected-by-Marketing-Which-Is-Why-I-Hate-the-iPod thread. Whinemeal, the rest of us will continue talking about the 5G iMod, which is real, about to be released, designed to improve audio quality and, in my limited experience, also happens to sound stupendous.

Any idea when (i.e. a date) we might hear something official from Vinnie on this?

I actually ordered my iMod on Friday, but I am not too concerned because I suspect that the DAC in the 4G will sound better anyway (although that might just be wishful thinking on my part). I am also concerned about the durability and portability of a cable that has capacitors built into it.

I'd give him a couple days, he's just getting back from the show and probably has some catching up to do.

I need a new source, the best I have is a 5.5g ipod 80gb with a cryo dock...this could be my solution

You just have to swap the chrome backplate for a 60gb one or maybe a 40gb too. It goes for about $15 on eBay in like-new condition.

Wow. As a non-native English speaker, I don't have a clue as to what you're saying. I hope it was positive …
