I want to hear my PC for gaming and play hi-fi music into my headphones at the same time.I am an audiophile and want the best possible sound above all else.
Im thinking wagner playing as Im in the helicopter in battlefield

headroom supreme amp
grado sr325i
headroom microdac
meridian 598dp dvd-a player
and of course SCAN Core 2 Duo with x-fi soundcard

the options:
1.computer via usb link to microdac , to supreme to grados...computer plays CD and game at same time and feeds output..no mixing required

2.meridian player plays Cd and signal is mixed with computer signal...is this the right approach ? what else do I need ? can i get real good sound this way ?

I take it the x-fi will not figure in any of this

You can always get a high quality switch box that has a selectable output and multiple inputs. Its cheap, and it works well.

yes thanks ,just not sure what its called and so cant find one
I looked at all the switch boxes on maplin.co.uk but none of them mix the 2 signals , they only select 1 or the other...I need some form of switch/mixer ?

Lamboption, you will need a standalone mixer for high-level signals. These aren't very expensive. You'll need at least two stereo inputs, and then you set their levels relative to each other using the controls, and there is also a master output level control. Connect the mixer's output to your headphone amp.

The Windows sound control panel doesn't allow mixing. I don't know if there are other software products that will take two PC sound streams and mix them to the PC sound output.

Do a search on various electronic sites for "high level mixer" and you should turn up something. You don't need microphone pre-amps, which is why you're looking for a high level (or line level) mixer.
