I'll be honest, I was a huge fan of the HD580s and with my listening habits, the HD650 sounds like the best bet. Just trying to hold off a bit longer before making the jump considering I will end up spending a ton on just the cans, an amp and cabling.

The best amp I'll have for a long time is the Hornet, and I'll be saving money for a good USB-powered DAC. Until then, All I have is my 5.5g iPod and Cryo Dock. But hell, by the time I'm done burning in and have some time to evaluate the sound I'll have enough for the new source

Oh, and I have an X-fi XtremeMusic , but I can count on that sounding pretty bad. Lol.

Just give those K701s some burn in time and THEN see what ya think! Very fast can, amazing detail, WIIDE soundstage! And that's STOCK! Okok, don't get the wrong impression of me, I'm not the AKG fan-boy... but, they are amazing cans!

I see... I always thought of the ipod as a week source (well that's just me), but with the Hornet on high gain you'll drive 'em! Just make sure you're using good quality file formats, K701s will show you how bad low quality files can be!!

I think it's cotdt that likes to do the modding? I had an x-fi and thought about the sheilding and crap, but I decided to return it and buy a USB DAC instead... I prefer external. But, you pod->Hornet should be sufficient until you upgrade.

For me, when I was looking for my ultimate sound nirvana, soundstage and tonality were the two big things I was looking for. Since we all have different ears, I think it's pretty much given that you're going to need to evaluate headphones for yourself. Morph deems the k701 to be more natural sounding (even stock and underamped).....I deem the HD650 to be more natural sounding (even stock and underamped). We're still probably going to feel the same way even with expensive gear.

If you're looking to upgrade an amp or source, I think the best thing is to ask yourself what you're looking for. In an amp, there are inherently going to be more bassy types that might help if you're finding the k701 bass shy. If it's distant sounding, then it probably needs something with a lot of juice.

Don't ask me about specific amps with synergy for AKGs though..I never found it when I was trying to like AKG..I'm just a Senn fanboy that pops up to defend Senns

Excuse me? Still recovering?? ANYWAY! The only thing I found the AKG's lacking was bass impact... if that were there, I'd still have them today.. the midrange was exceptionally smooth and liquid, voices had a very very eerie sensation of being REAL! That I do miss about them.

The HD650s, I consider great HPs for what they can do, but they had a tendency to put me to *yawn* sleep... I seriously think they are in need of an upgrade or overhaul... it's time.

I've since defected to Team Beyer!!

Oh and Mr. Rose that comment about 600+ for a tube amp, is a small price to pay compared to the thousands people shell out to "balance" the HD650s to help tighten that otherwise flabby bass!! Ha! .....HA! HA!

They prolly all said it already.
Enjoy your new Buy's money well spent imo.

The hornet will drive the k701's with ease.
But the 300 hour mark is just the start,
stuff just keeps getting beter and better the more hours you give them.

Don't use pink noise or any of that rubbish, listen to both of them from
the start dont rush for great sound, listen to all the different sound stages.
In for a great Ride.
