Anime similar to 'Ninja Scroll', the movie, or feudal japan anime?

i am a real novice when it comes to anime, but i really like this movie and have had it a while on dvd. also have ghost in shell and akira, but could never get into them the same way.

what other really good anime is similar to Ninja Scroll, possibly set in feudal Japan?.. instead of modern or futuristic, which much seems to be.

also, is there a series of ninja scroll, and is it as good?

Rurouni Kenshin is the only one I can think of that meets your criteria. There's both a TV series and several movies. It's quite old though, so don't expect the animation / artwork to be on the same level as Ninja Scroll.

No idea if Ninja Scroll series was any good - but I've never heard any rave reviews or strong recommendations...

If you're willing to take a slight twist on the feudal, I'd highly recommend Samurai Champloo.

Basilisk.

The animation on the Kenshin OVA's are still pretty good, even by today's standards, although the TV series may be a different story.

For some more series in feudal settings, try Basilisk, 12 Kingdoms (has a Japanese/Chinese setting), and even Seirei no Moribito (currently airing). I havn't watched Ninja Scroll before, but I'm sure you could find something that will fit your tastes in some of the mentioned series.

ninja scroll is pretty full on and has an 'R' rating. i'm not really into the pokemon or 'giggly' type anime.

You might like Berserk too.

x2 on the Samurai Champloo.

I'd have to say i was midly disapointed with the overall result of Beserk. Many say the manga was much much better.

Yeah, the anime was pretty much just a long commercial for the manga.

that's what you need for some serious quality animation. out on the regular fansub sites as we speak, up to episode...3? 4?

ditto on the "Samurai X" OAVs - don't go for the Kenshin TV series if you're looking for better quality, but the OAVs are great.

champloo is over the top, but fun. like cowboy bebop, like champloo. like the animation of Ghost in the Shell, like Moribito.

Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin OVAs) FTW. It has the setting, animation quality, violence and adult themes to satisfy a fan of Ninja Scroll.

Samurai Champloo should also please. It's off-kilter, but delves deep into a rich quasi-historical samurai-laden setting. Top-notch fights.

I feel like Escaflowne (movie) might do the trick as well, although it mixes time periods and leans more towards fantasy.

Twelve Kingdoms is better than all the above, IMO, but doesn't really belong in the samurai category either.

Oh yeah, Berserk. It should also do you right, but I was mildly disappointed with the Euro medieval setting at first. I got over it pretty fast.

You must watch Rurouni Kenshin (TV series and OVA). It was made about ten years ago so the animation is outdated, but the storyline is great and I loved all the characters. It's the first anime series I watched and it got me hooked. (IMHO it's much better than Ninja Scroll TV series.) You only need to watch the series up to ~60, then watch the first OVA, then read the manga, and if you still haven't have enough watch the last OVA.

I didn't find the OVA animation "outdated." Beautiful animation is beautiful animation. Animation for the TV series could rightly be called outdated though.

Sorry, I was referring to the TV series, guess I should have been more specific. Though I was surprised the first time I watched the OVA (after the TV series). The animation, music, and overall feel was just so... dark.

And the OVA has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard from an anime. Even if you don't watch it at least give the CD a listen.
