It could be a New Zealand unique spider, but it might not as well...

It might be one of the huntsman, particular to your region. This picture shows a Christchurch huntsman (Isopedella victorialis)

Do you see any black/white stripes on the lower leg segments ?

it's probably a wolf spider native to your area - which can easily be confused with the common huntsman. the distinguishing features are the lighter colour and the smaller size of the abdomen compared to the head. the dots on the abdomen may look like eyes, but they're not. no spiders have real eyes on their abdomen, they have fake ones to prevent predators from attacking from behind.

Yeah I thought it looked like a wolf spider. And the white sphere that is stuck to its abdomen (you can just see it in the pic) I think must be the eggsac.

I know what you mean! When I look at pictures of spiders it makes me a bit nervous. I think I may have mild arachnophobia. Oh well! Thanks for the help guys!

on the topic of arachniphobia - many researchers believe there is an easy answer to why so many people (if not all) are afraid of spiders. it is known that very large species of spiders have existed (about the size of a small dog) which were probably very dangerous to humans. the fear of these has developed into a sort of instinct which is present (more or less) in all of us. even most infants with no concept of what a spider is can display fear when confronted by one.
