Never mind Bond villains, check out what my Government built near to where I live in the UK during the cold war...

Oh, and for the god of headfi, go to the interactive map, and click on the Radio room. Check out the tube amps they have!

Work there? I want to live there!
Seriously, I love giant cold-war-era underground sites like that... I'd love to be able to get in and have a stroll around...

So would I! I was aware of the nearby WWII era underground munitions dumps and always wanted to sneak in, but never had the guts... sounds like some kids in the area did manage to with this place.

Very retro

The Radio Room in Area 15... Crown Copyright - used with permission of the MOD

... was the bunker's internal broadcasting system...

...broadcasting music and external broadcasts throughout the complex.

On the left are the amps for the bunker's PA System....

Wow, that's a huge complex. All we had on this side of the pond was a piddling 2.5-acre bunker for the surviving members of Congress. For obvious reasons, they sited it under a golf resort.

It was kind of an open secret until it was revealed in 1992. Funny quote from the resort's archivist:

Quote:
“I had heard stories,” Mr. Conte said. “When I got here, it was like, ‘Hey, here’s somebody new we can tell the rumors to!’ Everybody had heard something, but nobody knew for certain. It was sort of like sex for a teenager in the 1950s; you knew it existed, but you couldn’t confirm it for yourself.”

I took the video tour - that place is really vast. I'd be happy down there...

I was wondering about that, figured somebody on here might know!

Those look like transmitting tubes. Though they say "amp" at the top, you do use linear amps for radio transmission. And it looks like a transmitting station anyhow. I've never seen tubes like that for audio.
