Friend Suspended - What's Your Take - Page 2

That's really unfortunate. The senior class at a local high school in NJ plays "Senior Assassins" every year. It's been happening for many years. I remember being in middle school and talking about how kids couldn't wait to be a senior in high school to play it, it was sort of a rite of passage thing. It's like $5 or $10 to play and the winner gets the pot. The school knows about it, but as long as long as the actual water pistols aren't on the property it's fine. The point of this post is simply to let people know that this game is nothing new, and is played across the country. It has nothing to do with any recent events and is not meant to be malicious.

Sorry, I can't offer any advice for your friend.

I can offer advice to people who are gonna play this: Be smart in public. A friend of mine got arrested because he was following another player in a store, concealing the water pistol under an over sized coat. A woman saw him and was obviously alarmed so she called the police. He was taken to the station, questioned, and released, but it was a big deal in the newspaper.

So I could have had fun in high school? Now you tell me...

What did you do to get expelled, perhaps actually shoot a water pistol?

i threatened to kill people i did not like. anyway, i got a free year off so i only had to do 3 years of high school. it was fun staying at home and learning whatever i liked. well, i served my punishment, if you want to consider it that.

i don't think your friend is in any sort of trouble.

I think they had reason to suspend, but I don't necessarily agree with the "potential threat" bit. That said, don't they put that down for anything? Kids get into a fight, bring a screwdriver to school, etc. or is it something very rare?

Perhaps the name "assassins" might not have been in the best of taste. Considering how people get after something like the VT shootings, I can totally see how this whole thing could have gotten to this point. I personally see nothing wrong with what he was trying to so, maybe a little dumb talking about it on campus even before the shootings, but still harmless sounding. On the other hand, isn't being a high school senior a little old to be playing with water guns?

holy cotdt, your thread was kind of extreme.
Kind of weird that the school actually suspend you buy just a thread though.....
I means... that kind of thread goes around in my high school a lot, and seems like the school doesn't make a big deal out of it

Talk about college, I don't even know if I am going to grad school.
Just got 5/50 on my ECE mid term =_=

Well, I threatened not just one person but a quarter of the school. Hehe. I don't know what I was thinking back then. It must be the nature of high school.

So you must be really good with electronics, since you've taken ECE courses. Build some amps for me! I got a ton of amp projects that you can finish for me

Where are you going for medical school?

The original post is a bit long; I think people are missing the point. He wasn't suspended for continuing to plan Assassins, he was suspended because some teacher overheard him talking about it and assumed he was in breach of the promise he had made the day before.

Your friend needs to talk to a lawyer immediately. This could impact his future academic career and livelihood. A letter from a lawyer is usually enough; it sends these administrator types scurrying.

Yes, I agree that he should work to get it off his record. If he did breach an agreement, it is his fault. However, the consequences may be over the top and not necessarily addressing the problem. This game is actually really popular in some dorms at my school... a side note.

I have to agree that OP's friend need to work something out with the school.... I am pretty sure if he tries really hard, he may erase it. (for example, sue the education department of the school.... yes, it can be done )

as for DIY amp... I am a ECE first year student XD
As for building amps... so far, we have built the basic DAC.... (not sure how that will be implemented in real DAC though)
Also, there will be an amp building project in my next year's class
wonder how they will sound compare to the Stello

But anyway, for self built amp... I guess I am ok with it, since I can recognize most of the part and schematic alright, just the casing and soldering will be a pain.

yes. i've been to court multiple times to get stuff off of my permanent record. stuff like that should only be done if it's something you absolutely shouldn't have gotten in trouble for (for example, getting suspended for not walking fast enough when a teacher was calling for you. ) and i believe that this situation is one of those, ESPECIALLY since it's about that time for getting into college. he cannot let this stay on his record.

i am clearly biased in favor of the student that is getting ********ted, since i constantly get ******** from teachers for no reason. i guess me fighting back doesn't help, but school staff should get the whole story before they get someone a big black mark on their permanent record. i treat school discipline problems like legal proceedings: i do not say anything to any teachers unless my father is present when it's a serious issue. i will not write a report on what happened, nothing like that; he's gotta be there. however when the damage has already been done, that's when you've got to take action. suggest legal action to your friend, it's the only way out in the end, the school will not reason with him.

edit: and no i do not take advantage of my school. i won't fight back against the school if i actually did something wrong.

And these are the people that actually got degrees saying they were smart enough to teach kids.
