Anyone out there not blown away by an iMod?

Ok, so we've all seen the posts by the legions of iMod advodates proclaiming how great the iMod is, but is there anyone out there who feels that the difference in SQ between a good dock line out cable and the iMod is not all that huge?

from what i've read 'round these parts, those are crickets you hear chirping in the background ... !

I have both an iModded and a plain one. I have used the ALO Six Shooter and an ALO Cryo Dock on the unmodded and a cheapo as well as nice Revelation Audio Cryo Silver on the other. There is no comparison, the iMod wins hands down.

The iMod is one of those rare pieces of kit that is highly regarded nearly 100% across the board. It would be interesting if someone speaks up. Then I can just tell them how absolutely wrong they are!

I kid! I kid!

Just out of morbid curiosity, I am building up an iRiver H120/Optical/MicroDAC/Amp rig to see if that can perform as good as an iMod/Amp - but that may take time and $$$$

As how things stand now, iMod blew away any known portable source I have listened to.

A Samsung K3 weights about 1.5oz. How much more does an iMod weight? Is the iMod that many times better in SQ

When you become a portable audiophile, size and weight matters not anymore. 4G iMod 60GB is a brick in itself without taking into account the mandatory external amp that need to be lugged along.

how many times better? suffice to say it has been well known that iMod scales up in term of performance/quality to $1000 dedicated CD Players - got the picture?

The question is it enough to make you tell someone who is a little tight for cash but needing a new Mp3 player to get the imod over a cryo dock or other LOD?

It depends on the person, some people take stock in a collective opinion, some will need to either listen to an iMod's sound or compare the two.

Another question to ask might be this: What constitutes great for the iMod enthusiast? In other words, without using superlatives, can anyone who owns both describe in minute detail the difference in sound between unmodded and iModded iPods? A lengthy huff-by-huff review (using the same software and music for each player) needs to be calligraphed. Vinnie would doubtless approve.

Also: It appears the iMod difference is less important to some listeners, since I've seen iMods in the sources-for-sale forum on a fairly regular basis. Used iMods seem somewhat difficult to sell (which will change whenever Vinnie moves them out of production). I'd love to know why certain owners part with their iMods so easily.

Before pulling the trigger on my iMod, I have this furious debate going at the back of my head - is iMod that much better compared to stock 4G iPod?, how does iMod compares with iRiver H120/140/Optical/DAC/amp? It drives me nuts! In the end I just gave up comparing because it hurts.

Holding to the principle "hearing is believing" I took the risk and blew $499 out of my already depleted reserve. I owned 2 4G iPods before so I know how good this iMod have to be in order to impress me - yet it didn't fail to do so out of the box. If you are an audiophile looking for uber transparency in a DAP, iMod is the answer - 4G lineout was clean but not that transparent. iMod is utterly neutral sounding, 4G iPod stock lineout was close, but not close enough. The list goes on an on and on. I have written about my findings on iMod three weeks back and I am too lazy now to re-write that all over again.

Like I said earlier, if you find it hard to be convinced of iMod merits, don't push yourself - in the end what sounds good to your ears matter the most - not what other people hear. Peace.

Maybe I can help a bit.

When I started searching for the "ultimate" portable source I came to the conclusion that I should either follow the iRiver h140/DAC/amp path or the iMod path.
Since I found a reasonably priced LaRocco PRII at the same time, I went for the later. I thought that with this combo I would find ultimate sonic bliss.
But the whole combo was huge and a pain to carry around. I also had trouble with my In Ears (Cans were no option). I am a lazy person and I prefer to travel light, so I was unhappy with the setup.
I tried different bags and transportation devices but nothing made me feel comfortable.
My first reaction was selling the whole stuff (and I tried) but when I found no immidiate buyer I evaluated the whole situation and and made the the right adjustments.
Now I am happy with the iMod.

In my experience most of us just give in to our cravings much to quickly. A good solution takes time and patience.
