ultra slow Wi-Fi help

I am at my uncles, he has a Linksys WRT54G & a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4447. He has Verizon DSL, I think it's 768/256?

I been surfing with it, and its v-e-r-y s-l-o-w. I did a Speakeasy Speed Test, http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ . I got 742 kbps down and only 47 kbps upload!!!

Windows XP Pro SP2, wireless is Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG with latest drivers from Intel (v11 I think). The WRT54G has firmware 3.03.6 and set to only 802.11G channel 11. There are no other wireless devices/computers connected to it, but there is one Desktop connected to it, and it's turned off.

What is making the laptop or linksys uploading so slow??

I'll do the speed test on the desktop to see if too is effected with slow uploads.

Not sure - could be a lot of things like security settings on the router (some security protocols make for slower connections), the DSL provider, the wi-fi card/internals... in any resolve www.dslreports.com does an upload/download test and they also have a tweaks session to tweak your connection for maximum throughput.

Hope that helps.

Well from the wired desktop it's not much different. Speakeasy tests were 980 kbps download & 67 kbps upload. So it's not just wi-fi thats slow, theres something wrong with the WRT54G settings or the DSL it self. =(

Anyway you can bypass the router.?
And then run the test, that way you can eliminate the dsl service as just being slow.

Try powercycling the dsl modem. (unplugging power, plugging back in)
same for the router.

You would be suprised what a good powercycling can do.
(Yes I work in internet tech support )

Well by passing the router didn't help. Speed tests were 993 kbps & 68 kbps.

I'll powercycle the Westell WireSpeed B90-210015-04 for afew minutes and test again.
