when you're playing movies on your computer, will you hear much of a difference using the the onboard soundcard or something like a 0404usb using either headphones or speakers?

Sure, it can definitely help, but I've always though the discussions here and elsewhere over improved audio is more than a bit over-exaggerated with video. Course maybe the Wachowski brothers and Michael Bay need all the help they can.

so not too much difference for videos then?

Why wouldn't it? I mean, I can tell a difference between my friend's 5.1 setup with integrated vs. his new x-fi.

Really, it is all up to you.

A better source is a better source. Anything will sound better really. CDs, music, videos, mp3s, streaming radio, etc.

I have not listened to 0404usb so I don't know how much of an upgrade it is really.
