so why do ppl want to woodied a phone? primarily for asethetic purposes?

Anyone know the current best price on the D2000?

The Darth Denons move a little closer to the Darth Beyers than the stock D5000's do, but in general, my comparison would of the DB's and the D5000 would park the Darth Denon closer to the D5000 than the Darth Beyer, yes.

In other headphones I think the wood enclosure makes a bigger difference than in the straight D5000/D2000 case, although the D5000's wood is pretty thin. The Darth Denon sounds enough better that the thicker wood probably plays a role.

But the aesthetics are a reason, yeah. I like wood

Speaking personally - Yup

Edit: There's also the exclusivity factor of course, associated with owning something a little different from the normal run of the mill product.

Unfortunately, I had canceled my order for the D5000 from Audiocubes because of the long wait they had. I had found a head-fier who was going to sell me their D5000 right away but they ended up finding someone locally to buy it. So now that I have read this thread and see that the difference between the D2000 and D5000 is minor, I decided to save the cash and go for the D2000 from PJ. Had my deal for the D5000 not fallen through, I would have just stuck to it, because I do have to admit the wood is very fine looking. But on second thought, I did not want to have to deal with termites!

If the DT880 cans were oval like the HD650s instead of circular, I would agree with you that they're comfortable of the three. However, the circular pads on the Beyers and AKGs annoy me.

Any idea when Larry's going to start offering these mods? Everything he makes is amazing, so I really can't wait to see how the different types of wood and the different cables affect the look as well as the sound of the D2000's.

I don't know, but he does plan to. I hope it's soon! I have to send this pair back to him on Monday, and I will miss them!

he should let you keep it for the future business it has generated for him.

LOL! But that would be Payola, and I don't work that way. And I'm not sure Larry needs my help - based on his rising build times, I'd say his business is doing pretty well as it is

payola...I wonder how many disc jockies from the 50's and 60's wish they had never run into that!

not unlike yourself...you have become the "in-house" headphone/amplifier
critic for all of us at Headfi and we are in your debt. your reviews are without
bias and bereft of any preconception or baggage. you are fair and even-handed
and approach new products with intelligence and healthy curiosity. well done sir!

I'm blushing. Thanks. I enjoy helping folks to the extent I can, and I love listening to stuff

Big thanks to NFusion770 for loaning me the D2000's, and to Larry from Headphile for loaning me the Darth Denons, to make this comparison possible.
