Zune is more sturdy than ZVM.
Although video requires transcode on Zune, the screen on Zune is bigger and less colorful.
No line-out for Zune, yes for ZVM

I did what the others recommend: go to best buy (etc) and try both. I bought a zune. I could have gotten a ZVM for $199 or a zune for $249 + free power pack (car charger, etc). I was planning on buying a car charger anyways as i plan to use it for road trips and such.

Zune:
- not a ums device or drag n drop in explorer device
- sounds great
- bigger screen
- slightly bigger i think
- wifi built in (although it currently is useless)
- have to transcode video (but i haven't messed with video, don't really plan to)
- supports mp3 / wma / aac
- software actually isn't as bad as people make it out to be. i sync'd up my (un-DRM'd) mp3 collection fairly quickly and easily. I haven't used it for any of it's music management functions, so maybe that's where the gripe is
- looks better (IMO)

ZVM:
- cheaper
- plays a wide variety of video formats
- more open. i think it's a standard windows multimedia device which may be drag n drop but i'm not sure
- sounds good
- works on linux

oh, and the mother of all comparison charts:

I choose the zune hoping that future upgrades to the firmware will make the wifi useful. And i'm crossing my fingers hoping that rockbox will one day work on it.

ok guys, don't make thing too complicated when you try to decide which mp3 player to buy. The two most important things to consider when buying mp3 player are sound quality and price/performance ratio. Others are not as important. Those are just my 2 cents.

well thats only IYO

for me I like the screen to look nice, good video quality, lots of supported codecs, battery life and much much more stuff. Its not only about the price and the SQ ya know!

this is IMO of course

Definitely ZVM at that price. Zune certainly isn't worth $100 more.
You can always invest the leftover on headphones or amps

well i agree with price/performance ratio. but i also take screen size and the ablily to customize wallpaper into consideration.
you can customize wallpaper on both

More sturdy?

Or, do you mean less scratchable??

Hard to imagine the ZVM - with it's anodized magnesium backplate - being less sturdy than the all-plastic Zune.....

that weird thing on the back is a coated piece of metal.

as opposed to the plastic front.

So, is the consensus that the Zune sounds better than the creative ZenM?
