K1000 Room Impression Thread - Page 4

I'm really glad people enjoyed listening to the Zanden and that k1000 room was just awesome! Thanks to jp11801 and everyone else for setting it up.
Also great meeting Tyrion and ping in the room as well.

Regarding the zanden, I think the people in the room have had more listening time with it than I have so my impressions are limited.
I was actually set on getting the Air Tight after demoing it, but then saw the Zanden on audiogon.
It's the model 7000 300B set amp, not the 9000, which I would've preferred anyways given what Afrikane and Nik have both said regarding the great synergy between the 300b set amps and the k1000

Luckily, the seller lived right next to the meet in san jose!

At the seller's house, I heard it with the emm labs cdsa SE player--it was just without flaw for me. nothing seemed to be missing, soundstage, presence, body, detail, dynamics. Everything seemed balanced to the sound I liked.
Switching to my capitole player, everything was the opposite...muddy and limited soudstage. Good, but not great...not the sound that I heard from the air tight/ayre 5xe combination that I had previously demoed.
Was not going to buy it.
Luckily for me and him, the seller was a great guy and took the time out to try different tubes, different ICs, and power cords.
Everything completely changed.
Still not equivalent to the emm labs/zanden combo, but 85-90% there. It's missing the extra body that made the sound so balanced and dynamic.

This is a great amp...the sound is incredible and I like the fact that it can grow and improve by changing anything that's attached to it.
Wouldn't say it's better or worse than the air tight that i demoed, just that they both have the same potential depending upon what components and tubes are used with it.
Given that, I can just imagine what Nik's system must sound like given the amount of tweaking he has done for it.

Unfortunately, getting that last X% might lead me to an emm labs source and other expensive components.
But that's for another day...for now, enjoying the k1000 ALOT and just plan on listening to music for a while...

...and where are the pics? All those peeps, all those cameras and no pics? Surely someone took a pic of the K1000 room!

Just some other impressions:

The hardwired k1000 sounded the best for me and is next on my to get list.
It added some of the body that was missing and the sound in general seemed more refined.
For some reason, the hardwired mogami didn't work for me...preferred the stock cable over it.

The Moth amp was also my favorite after Zanden. It did everything well, but I thought the zanden slightly improved upon each of those things, but I guess it should given the huge price difference between them.
Very smooth with the k1000s.

Did listen to the woo Audio and it sounded really good so I can understand what tyrion is saying. Unfortunately, heard it in the main room with all the noise and distractions so can't really say how it compares with the other amps. But, it was definitely powerful enough to drive the k1000s with authority.

Well, it appears that the left driver was unable to take the pressure of the K1000 room. I guess it's off to AKG and oblivian that surely will follow. Anyone that decided that now hate their K1000 please pm me and tell me how much you want for your pair. I need another pair while this pair is being fixed which could be months considering my last experience dealing with them.

Crap, sorry to hear that tyrion. Hope they can fix it quickly.

Thanks!

Thanks to jp11801 and Tyrion for man'ing the K1000 room.

I really enjoyed the Moth amp with the CD player/Headroom DAC source and the hardwired Equinox combo. Very refined with a great resolution without any harshness at all.

I only listened to the Zanden briefly but based on the aboved comments, it sounds like a winner.

I liked the Pass Labs Aleph30 straight out of the Slim Devices Transporter analogs. I'm all about no harshness with the K1000s and I thought this combo was good in that sense.

It was interesting to see and hear the Dussan Integrated amp there. I wanted to bring my Jungson integrated and this would have been a nice opportunity to compare them. Unfortunately, my Jungson is needs a cap replaced and was not available. I found the Dussan to sound very nice but it did have some slight harshness to it with the K1000s.

Best!

Dan, that's kind of you but a deal is a deal. Did you buy the HE90/HEV90 on ebay yet.

I can't post all that I want to say at the moment, but here's a teaser. My Moth 300B might have been a contender for favorite in the mind of many on Saturday during the day, but when foo_me brought in his new Zandan 300B all bowed down in submission. The Zandan -- fed by foo_me's AudioAero Capitale -- was beyond belief. The clarity, the resolution, the air, the S O U N D S T A G E, the body, and the touch of 300B warmth made for an outstanding match with both the tube output of the Capitole and the the K1000s themselves. Beautiful sound, beautiful presentation, and beautiful synergy.

The Moth quailed when hooked up to the same source and the same cans. It was warmer and mushier and less resolved (even with Crystal Cable ICs, which were not my first choice but surely allow for incredible resolution). Don't get me wrong, the Moth sounds beautiful and takes the K1000 places that most amps cannot. The Zandan list price is 5 times more than I paid for the Moth, but also several class levels ahead.

If you haven't tried the Zandan, Nik, you better figure out a way to do it. The AirTight wasn't there to compare, but I believe the Zandan won out in foo_me's search. He had just listened to the K1000 on the AirTight the day before the meet and just took delivery of the Zandan that day after finding a local seller on Audiogon who gave him an audition before purchasing.

I did not have time at the end of the meet to connect the K1000 to the Woo 5, but I will be doing so tonight, you can be certain (fatigue and all). I also can't wait to get the Moth, the Woo 5, the Zandan, and maybe an AirTight together for a real shoot-out one of these days while Jack Wu lets me borrow his beauty. The Woo 5 has both a dedicated 4-pin jack on the front and speaker posts on the back, so it is very versatile on the K1000 front. It also has an impedance switch on the front that made this powerful beast sound beautiful on CD3000s too. Did I mention I was impressed with Woo Audio's work yet?!

can only imagine how i'd feel if i couldn't listen to mine and reminds me to get a backup pair sooner rather than later...

Kudos to the guys that came up with the brilliant idea of a dedicated K1000 room and to the guys who brought their gear along. I would have loved to be in this room at the Meet.
Congrats on the Zanden Min, I am sure that it is going to give you musical bliss for a long time to come.

Voltron, sounds like a great idea to have all those 300B's for comparison.....it must be a sonic plus to be able to get rid of the extra wire when you plug the K1000 directly into the Woo5.....will be particularly interested to hear your impressions with the Woo5 and the K1000.
I don't suppose there was an Extreme on hand to compare with some of the heavy hitters.

I wonder if the Woo5 had the stock tubes that came with it, or were there other NOS tubes to try?
