W5 and other tubes.

Sounds like everyone had a great time!

Did you guys tube roll the W5? What other tubes would be the closest in quality of sound to the venerable WE300B without costing as much? Will be getting my W5 soon and wanted to explore other tubes besides the stock ones. What about the other tubes, 6SN7 and the 5U4G..any recommendations? Will have to check out these wire options as well!

You should study the thread linked just above your post and you will find some discussion of the WA5 tube rolling that we did. The main conclusion is that the stock tube set is quite nice and well matched to the amp (assuming what I have from Jack Wu is the stock set). The WE pair that I bought for $500 from A-gon is superb with the WA5. Made it better in many ways. We tried the TJ Premium Mesh Plates that sound great on my Moth amp but they sounded horrible on the WA5. Not a good match at all. Less body instead of more, more harsh instead of less, etc. I also replaced the 6SN7s with Sylvania 6SN7GTs that are very nice.

I did not try other 6SN7s and I did not try anything but stock rectifiers. I would be very curious if I owned this amp and had more time. I think that swapping them all out for NOS, or new in the case of the WE, would really be even better.

I just sent my K1000 to Jack so he could match it with my W5...now that's service! Will report back here after the amp arrives and I have had some time with it. I actually have the very first production model!

Any idea what he is going to do. I have one on order as well and the K1000 is my primary headphone. I would be interested if you've had a discussion with him about this. Thanks.

K1000 and the W5...

Hi Tyrion,

I think what he wanted to do was that originally, he had a pair of K1000 when he designed the amp, he does not have a pair now. Since mine is the first production model going out, he wanted to make sure that the specs were still correct/accurate on the W5. I don't think it has anything to do with each individual K1000, at least that is what I gathered from several emails with Jack. I will email him again and ask about this to make sure.

I thought that he was going to do something to tune the amp for the K1000, which I kind of thought it already was. Let me know what you hear. I am more curious how my Omega Superhemps will sound.

I suspect this "tuning" is only for the K1000 section of the amp. Will get a clarification, and also post once I have the amp and have it broken in etc.

Info from Jack on my K1000

As I suspected, since I was the first purchaser of the W5, Jack wanted my K1000 to check and make sure everything was correct. Here is his reply:

"The reason is that we don't have a K1000 to test with the WA5. You are our first buyer of this amp and I would not allow any mistake happen. Mostly, this is just a sentimental test which also allow us to check against any odds. I visually inspected your K1000 but not tested it. I will let you know the definite delivery date 2 to 3 days from now."
