I would buy a second hand SR-71 however this is fairly heavy so if this is an issue, try a GoVibe. I use both with my SR-225 and love them.

I would get a home and portable amp. Spend about 50-100 on a decent portable and another 150-200 on a decent home amp.

I've finished my amp journey and ended up with a MisterX built portable XP and a MisterX built Dynalo w/ crossfeed. I couldn't be happier.

The differences in source and headphones are greater than in amps (unless you are comparing Tube to SS). Make sure you have made a final headphone selection.

Hmm... Maybe a really good portable amp because it can serve as a portable, home and DAC. Like the Headphonia DAC 3 Switches. :O

Contact MisterX for an XP/whatever he feels like or get a Porta Corda b/c both will rock you out.

Sure, simply for voltage swing and current output alone, you're looking at at portable amp that runs off a single (a few on dual) 9V batteries for portable. Now compare that to a 24V or 30V average home amp that drains a few hundred milliamps of current. What do you think will have more impact?

Don't get me wrong, I totally love my PINT and having a chance to build MisterX's XP amp, I can definitely say it's really a great little portable amp even though I did use cheaper resistors for mine that the crazy high quality thin film types he uses on his builds. Still, when I compare that amp to home amps, they just have more refinement and can really drive my HD650's.

I guess that's my main reason for prefering home amps, under most circumstances portables just don't have the voltage required to drive my Sennheisers and I use them exclusively at home. On the road, my KSC75's sign with MisterX's XP amp, but still there's improvement when using my SOHA to power them (rare, but happens).
