Is it bad to put your hands over the drivers?

I always felt I wasn't good to put your hands over the back of the drivers on the grado's

I never do it but when I let people listen to my ms1's they always do two things:

1) put them on backwards (IE: back of the drivers facing the ears)

and

2) Put hands over backs over drivers.



It might be bad if the hands make an air tight seal and when they take their hands off it will "suck" the driver with it?


I think I will just stop letting people listen to them w/o some ground rules

Well it won't damage the headphones at least.

Putting your hand over the back of an open headphone will reflect the backwave and cause phase cancelation and reinforcement at various frequencies which will give you a comb filter like effect, but no harm will be done to anything other than the sound quality.

People who do that to open headphones are probably so used to aweful sounding headphones that they aren't bothered by the effect on the sound.

OOOooooh I tried that with my MS-1s

I made them "Closed" headphones with my palm. They sounded... so funny I giggled at them myself.

But no, don't be paranoid, no damage done!

No, that should be fine it must be funny to see you put on your MS1 all grabbing the sides with your fingers and slipping them on your head.

I normally just grab them by the pads. It's easy to bend them and put them over my head, and the palms of my hands are cupped over the back(not touching it). I don't intentionally do it like this to avoid touching the backs, just seems the most efficient and easiest way to put them on.


And I've always been a little paranoid by nature.

xnothingpoetic, you should definitely try wearing your MS1's with the backs against your ears sometime...it's really...weird

lol, Head-fi.. only place people comfortable enough to talk about wearing things backwards XD

Anyways, I tried to make it closed with my hands when I got my first Grado, the MS-1s.. and wow.. they suck the life outta it.. no soundstage.. no bass.. brighter XD but.. yea really bad lol.. damage wise I am wondering about the same thing

works on just about every open headphone i'd assume based on experience with my phones, even the semi-open DT880s

don't think it would have the effect that you imagine it would unless your hands are like air tight suction cups, or better still mini vacuums

Grados don't have a soundstage to begin with
