Hope you're not ampless with your iMod (couldn't check as your profile is still empty—at least, enter your country of origin!)

Goldangit!—that's one heck of a first post!

I would vote AE-2 but it's not an option. I'm thrilled to have a long battery life which my Micro does not (also not on the list). If the Micro had a built-in rechargeable lithium battery I would rank it even with the AE-2 for convienence and overall great SQ.

The fact that the Micro has such a nice crossfeed almost makes up for the bad battery power situation. It also has a very nice wall wart.

People don't like portaphiles do they?

I do, and it's my vote for "favorite amp". Too bad if it's not on the OP's list!

The Maxxed out Portaphile V2^2 with Blackgates and LT1201 is a fantastic amp. Takes a good 300+ hours to settle but it rewards with great sound. Its biggest drawback is its 2.5 hours of operarion before you need a new battery (full function in use except high gain).

In any case, thanks for the thorough review, which played heavily into my decision to go with a Hornet or a Supermicro (with the smiv winning out).

Yes the wait sucks but what a sound out of the Supermicro IV. Best of luck.

i like how not one, but TWO people didn't realize this was a portable amp poll and listed not only home amps, but tube amps.

then again, they could carry a large dc power supply in their backpack and a water cooler for it. maybe....

Nah, just my harem of five fine chicks sporting some solar power backpacks and amps. When one battery / amp dies, next chick! I wouldn’t travel with my tube amps any other way.

Where's Bithead ?

I did see the option for Bithead. It was my first portable to get the most out of my laptop, as the source.

I would gather given that most of the other choices are amps only, that you'd need to vote for the Airhead as that's what the relative equivalent is.

SR-71 here. It might be bigger than the rest but it sounds bigger too. I like its blackness too.

Love your work Ray.
Well, Krool's Hornet was my first portable amp I've ever listen to. All the decent cans have been in use by other meet guys, so I grabbed my old MS1's and plugged them into iRiver H140 and Hornet and WHOA! Could not believe what I'm hearing. It wasn't MS1 sound I was used to. Hornet transformed these cans into something much better. Great stuff this Hornet, unbelievably small thing, but packing some serious kicks right in the guts!

I figured I would bump this interesting thread.

What is your favorite amp out of all you've tried? Which one have you used the most? No I don't mean technically best.

For me it's the Headroom Micro because it works well with everything. I've had it for 3 years straight and loved every minute of it. Made me believe that "synergy" is a bunch of nonsense.

O2 would be next, maybe tied with the E9. E9 isn't perfect but I felt it was pretty good with most everything I tried over 38ohm. I wouldn't use an IEM with it. Yeah yeah..I know it's not transparent :normal_smile :

For under $100 it sounds pretty dang good.

Singlepower MPX3 slam. So angry at myself for selling it. No way I could ever get it back, sounds like the company failed and went horrible. Just have to remember how perfect it sounded with a pair of AT w5000's...
