What 20g-40g Flac players should I consider?

I know of the Iriver, Iaudio, and a Ipod can be Rockboxed. Any other I should look into? How many FLAC files could be stored on a 20g drive

The Toshiba Gigabeat F and X series players are reportedly very good with Rockbox. The F series are very reasonably priced as well.

thanks. I'll look into that now. I have all my stuff in Flac file for my Slim Devices Squeezebox, so I really want something that'll play FLAC, instead of having to convert everything to mp3 when I want it on my portable.

The Cowon A2 plays FLAC files even without Rockbox (though Rockbox is most excellent), and the sound quality and battery life are marvelous. It's more of a video player than an audio player, though.

Check out the flac.sourceforge.net -> hardware website.
It list up lots of portable players, and other supported hardware.

Thanks everyone. So, what's the average number of Flac file for 20g?

The average bitrate for FLAC files are somewhere in the 8-900kbps range.
You calculate the rest...

Edit: Ok, lets see.
We use a bitrate of 850kbps as an example:
850 (kilobits per second) / 8 (bits in a byte) = 106.25 (KiloByte per sec.)
106.25 (KiloByte per sec.) x 60 (seconds in a minute) = 6375 (KiloByte per minute)
6375 (KiloByte per minute) / 1024 (KiloByte in a MegaByte) = 6.22 MegaByte per minute

So the disk, which is 20GigaByte (usually 20,000,000,000 Byte).
20000000000 (Byte) / 1024 (byte in a KByte) / 1024 (KiloByte in a MegaByte) = 19073 MegaByte

19073 (MegaByte) / 6.22 (MegaByte per minute) = 3066 minutes, or 51 hours of lossless music.

Hope that answers your question.
...and that I got it right... he he

It depends on what sort of music you listen to. My average bitrate is just over 600kbs. Varies between under 300kbs and over 1000kbs.

Doesn't FLAC have an encoding level that influences "bitrate" and size?

I would check krmathis's list and go with the player that suited my needs best.

Yes, the bitrate is really dependant on the complexity of the music.
I have lossless files with bitrates anywhere between 2kbps (yes, two kbps) and 1108kbps. Average about 800kbps

Yes, since lossless codecs have variable bit rate, the Bit Rate can Vary greatly. If you encoded silence in a CBR format at 192kbps, it would always be that 192kbps. But if you encode silence in a VBR format, it can go down to 1 kbps.

I dont know if it infulences "bitrate" but it does compress the overall file size. The disadvantage is that decoding it requires more processing power and it will have a small impact on battery life. Same applies to ogg vs mp3. ogg sounds better but is harder to decode. ogg v2 ive heard should fix this.

Figure 3 CDs per GB, and you're pretty close.

Actually FLAC is an asymmetric encoder: It sacrifices encoding speed so that decoding won't take longer for higher compression.

But I would just stick with the default. The disk savings for an entire album is only in the magnitude of a few megabytes.
