With $1000 CDN ($870 american or so), i would stalk ebay for a Stax SRM-1/MK-2+Lambda pro combo (probably $650-700 american) and then get a zhaolu dac for a source. Hey, what do you know, its what i have . You could then just use the digital out of your computer, or get one of the soundcards reccomended here, if you could find one to fit in your budget. But basically, those stax are amazing for classical, i would see if you can find a pair on ebay in your price range.

sorry for my ignorance-sourced confusion. The lossless files are Apple Lossless, not Mp3. To me they are sort of interchangable lol, even though they are very different. What would that be then if not mp3? m4a or something?

@ Gsteinb88, I found this auction. Is this what you were talking about? Why is it always said in the same breath as the K 1000 (right?) "earspeakers"? Those components would also work for me right? Is it like two components?

Furthermore, I can't seem to find any info on the Zhaolu DAC upon google search. Can you point me to their site or a review or something?

I think Senns HD650/600/580 or AKG K701 should fill the bill...

Spend the rest on either a singlepower or a ray samuels amp. However, if only you could be flexible, the Corda Opera would be great with a digital source...good DAC and good amp.

Thats the amplifier, you need a pair of earspeakers to go with. Unfortunatly, there are no lambda pro's on ebay right now, excepting the one that needs recabling. There is a lambda pro signature with 2 amps, but its likely that that will go well out of your price range.
As to the zhaolu dac, their website is www.diykits.com.hk and you can find reviews all around this site, the search is your friend on this one (or your enemy, considering the number of threads its going to pull up).
Also, one last thing, the k1000 are "earspeakers" in the sense that they are pretty much speakers that aim at your ears directly. Stax uses the word earspeakers simply as another word for electrostatic headphones, which you a different principle to create sound, a charged mylar diaphram between two metal grills, which pull the mylar back and forth.

Whoa granode If Lavry DA10 + Balanced HD600 costs 1K, then I would have one of those months ago!

Whatever you get, maximise your cash by getting used gear. You can get great stuff much cheaper by shopping around and having patience. Scour ebay.USA, .DE, .UK etc, Canuck audio mart and Audiogon but that is usually not particularly cheap. You can pick up some real bargains out there if you look.

For classical music i would recomend the AKG 701, they are a very good buy for the amount of money that you are going to spend.

Is there an amp that is generally considered a good match with the K701?

How do you all like HeadRoom's products? For a little over my budget ($1000 USD) I can get a HR Desktop Amp/DAC and K 701, packaged for a price reduction. Would this be comparable to the other options listed?

It is hard for me to feel confident in a product with little reviews, like some of the equipment listed, but I like HeadRoom's website and universal acclaim.

They have this other package that is beginning to tempt me. Would this be worth an extra six months of saving? Is this an amazing amp/DAC for the money/if price was no object?

they package both these systems exclusively with the 701s, so I have a feeling there is some synergy there.

Any thoughts on Headroom?

Is that Lavry DA10 much better than the said products?

I briefly auditioned the Lavry DA10 and in no way do I think it is as good as my modded Zhaolu. It lacks the soundstage and transparency of the Zhaolu. Still, both these amps sound better than the popular DAC1.

I never tried the Headroom amp, but my best experience with the K701 is tube amps. Midrange bloom of tube amps make the K701 more intimate. Transformer-coupled single-ended triodes are the way to go, IMHO.

You can also make your own headphones, for not that much money. None of the commercial headphones have good bass. They use tiny magnets to make the headphone lightweight, which is a tradeoff in sound quality.
