Three discs cannot begin to encompass the best of Genesis. The platinum collection is a very good introduction though. If you are just getting into Genesis, The Platinum Collection is way better than any of the other compilations out. However, if the bolded ones are the ones you know, the second half of disc 2 and all of disc 3 will be VERY different (and FAR better too in my opinion ) than what you've heard. Much more prog, less pop.

Remember also that all the albums are slowly being released on hybrid SACD, too!

I am also old school Genisis as you can tell from my avatar. As posted above if you are only familier with the Collins poppy stuff you may not like the early Gabriel stuff. If you do get any early stuff please give it a chance and hopefully you will let it grow on you. I would recommend "Trick Of The Tail" as an intro to old Genisis, although this album has Collins as the singer the music is still in the older style, then I would recommend "The Lamb Lies Down". My favorite is "Foxtrot". Good luck and hope you get into Genisis

"Trick of the Tail" is a very good album for crossing over from Phil Collins pop into prog. However, for Gabriel, I would recommend Foxtrot before The Lamb. I got Foxtrot, The Lamb, and Selling England by the Pound at the same time and Foxtrot was the only one that really struck me immediately. Now my favorites are Selling England and The Lamb, but Foxtrot is way more accessible.

Still, if you're not sure, go for the Platinum Collection and get a bit from every album

Well, if you're more familiar with Phil Collins, I'd get A Trick Of The Tail as an introduction. It is pretty much similar to their records with Peter Gabriel, thanks to Steve Hackett on guitar, but it is a little bit poppier/tighter than their old stuff. It's still an awesome prog rock album, it has nothing to do with their 80's pop albums.

My favorite Genesis albums are Nursery Cryme, Selling England By The Pound and Wind & Wuthering, what an awesome band.

Definitely second that (pun intended)! One of the first albums I ever bought. Double album with side 3 taken up by one song "Supper's Ready". Absolutely wore the vinyl out and I still listen to this one today, over 20 years later that's how good it is.

For studio work, my personal fave happens to be Selling England by the Pound. However, I really love everything they did up until And Then There Were Three.

Once Genesis put out Duke I went right off them. I saw them live twice in the '70's though and liked them a lot back then. That double live album may be good but it doesn't have the song The Knife on it which is on the first live album with Gabriel singing and is a must have song for a live performance.

I also think "Seconds Out" is a great live album....I feel Suppers Ready is better than the original. I also like Winds....Then There Was Three....well, I can tolerate it. I love "The Knife" and have seen them twice in the early 70's.

Tnx a lot for the quick reactions!

I do not particularly like Phil Collins...
In fact; I can hardly listen to most of his songs.
The bold printed songs in my first post are songs I like so far.
My woman likes Phil's songs, and that's where whe differ, I find them so... (flauw, zoetsappig... I have no idea how to translate that in English, maybe someone can help me out here..? Maybe; boring, sappy... I don't know! )
I think I'll start with the one mentioned above, and allso get the live album...

Actually 30 years later. I believe "Seconds Out" came out in 1977. There is not one bad song on this cd. Dance on a Volcano, etc....every song absolutely smokes. I find some of the earlier studio stuff bland but this live record is electrifying.

Ok, so it's thirty years. You had to remind me?

without a question, Foxtrot. I saw Genesis, way back when, on the Lamb Lies Down tour. The studio version, although great, falls way short of the live version.

I have only seen Genesis live once, in 1982, but this was a band that was arguably the best live band ever. I agree on Seconds Out... stellar album, with Suppers Ready worth the price by itself.
