In particular, discs that have been in jukeboxes or played on crap turntables can sometimes look fine and then sound like a crackling fire when you get them home.
This portable is the first one I've heard of that looks like it might actually be useful. Is it readily available...?

I get a lot of use out of it... from the DJ shops to vinyl conventions to just use on the road...
On the road i can use headphones and battery and at hotel or home I can plug it into a stereo via the RCA connections or use the crappy internal speaker while it is plugged into wall with adapter.
I *think* the only way to get the Vestax is used or through some retailer with backstock as the product no longer appears on Vestax's website I am assuming it is out of production.
The Numark portable is a more recent model when compared to the Vestax. More information on the USB version here:
PT-01USB Portable Vinyl-Archiving Turntable
If my Vestax ever broke would buy this model in a heartbeat since the form factor allows it to be stashed in a record case. (and the USB connection might be useful too)
